BTW La Flo so much for me talking yesterday about having to wait for next season to see Contador back to winning ways.

She also argued that there was no way that Berti could use this stage to gap JRod ;)

Nice call. We should definitively not forget his teammates. Even those who towered over Purito (my god he must have been destroyed today) did their part.

But Paulinho is a beast. What i ride from him.

Before live pictures went on SBTB apparantly had several riders out front he helped Berti.

“We didn’t say anything on the radios because a lot of them are pirated by the other teams," says Contador after today's stage. Interesting.

Contador has been trying to get the better of Rodriques the past few mountain stages (or mountain-ish top finishes, before the masses start to pile on) and was unable to drop Rodriques to everyone's surprise including his. The stages when Contador would try and then get reeled in you could see how tired he was and how angry at not being able to drop him and take the Red leaders jersey.

Today he finally cracked/surprised/dropped Rodriques, so its not for lack of trying! I just hope Rodriques now tries to drop Contador as well, to keep the race exciting! Its not over just yet, so don't give it away to a rider like you have before. At this point in the race they are all tired so anything can happen. Go Race

No. this is nonsense. I am new to this sport, but i can see that the victory today was achieved with deals and tactics. Clever, but to claim an individual victory flies in the face of what the slip streaming and team tactics mean.

To my mind, the whole construction of these Tours need drastic revision. I think the only valid prize is for team performance. The rest (whether sprint or climb) is just down to tactics.

The term 'breakaway' says it all.

Stick to watching triathlons, then, and don't bother the rest of us.

Contador described his victory as "one of my three most important triumphs of my career, together with the one I took when I came back from my operation (for brain surgery in late 2004), in the Tour Down Under (in January 2005) and my win in Paris-Nice in 2007."

Wow. Today was a big one.

Thinking about it. Sergio Paulinho deserves a thread for himself. He pretty much destroyed Lastras and just had an epic ride.

best performance i have seen from paulinho since his 06 vuelta or maybe even since his 04 silver medal. . .. why doesn't he always race this strongly is beyond me

So a photographer captured the moment when Contador launched:

The entire front of the peloton (including Katusha (especially Katusha)) looks absolutely stunned.

As I posted in another topic, I'm surprised by how many Katusha were still there when Contador attacked, and then suddenly faded all together.
If I'm not mistaken Purito had no team mates on top of the climb (only Losada from the break).

alberto probably gave a majority of the stage prize money to tiralongo, as has long been the tradition in cycling. it's really the only gentlemenly thing to do.

14 years from now Tiralongo will go complaining to the media that Contador hasnt paid him his share for the stage.

He could podium I think :) Does anyone have a map of the course?

What he is going to podium the ttt himself. With Tossato and Morkov fighting to stay in his stream and Sorensen stragling of the back.

You see that as a ttt podium formula?

He means the ITT i'm assuming.

I already said it a few times. He's going to win it.

Hard course, narrow roads, a lot of corners, hilly.

Perfect for Contador.
