thus - it rarely happens.

You can only once get to the maximum. Everything else is lower.
So, have Contador and Schleck passed their best, or are they on their way to reach it?
And what's the situation like with Froome?

Uhm no. With the right preperation and a bit of luck you can reach top form every year.

I wouldn't agree.
Only once in a lifetime you can be in the shape of your life.
The question is - how long you can maintain it?

 I am a fan but I am also realistic.

I still remember your realistic thoughts about AC chances when Purito was in control:p You had to say sorry after Fuente De stage.

Anyway I just learn about Rogers rumours, from a sporting pov is great if he keeps a similar level and his role as road captain was brilliant, but his performance was one of the most suspicious from a clinic pov. And the quit of severals sport directors doesn't help.

Let's see what happens.

Top form isn't "the shape of your life"

Definition of top form
[of someone or some creature] in very good physical condition.

I was right though, Alberto couldn't drop Purito, he only won because he was awesome

I want to see them in top form.
Not in just very good physical condition.

If top form is a once in a life time thing you're not gonna see it so prepare to be disappointed.

"Top" refers to something highest.

'Top Form' is neither a pinnacle or an absolute, it's merely expressive of reaching current heights attainable. It neither precludes future increases or excludes future errosion of heights attainable.

Perhaps you guys can start a whole new thread discussing the definition of that single term "top form". That would be really interesting.

That wasn't really dropping him, Purito just chose not to follow him which we now know was stupid.

Nope, Purito couldn't follow him. He was on a bad day and AC was on a great one. You are down playing your boy again.

No we dont know that it was stupid. Letting Contador go solo 35km on a meh stage when you have the likes of Moreno and Menchov to tow you to the line was not stupid. Had he gone with Contador he would have found himself with only Losada for help and Contador would have attacked him again.

Having the advantage of his whole team present near the front at the moment they spoted the breakaway group ahead, and being among the first and only few to spot the breakaway, which resulted in all the boys receiving the radio message "full gas now, give it everything" might have aided the situation a little too. :)

Hindsight is sweet and taste like sugar and tangerine.

Indeed, and particularly so when it illustrates great tactical awareness, planning, and team cooperation / coordination, and as such reflects success at the ethos you have strived for. :)

Hm I don't know I think it was Matti who said Katusha were arrogant and thought they would bring him back so Purito didn't go with Alberto.

The thing is we don't know what would've happened had he gone with Alberto, it could be better or just as bad as what did happen.
