In 2004, during the Vuelta a Asturias, he got a seizure and collapsed on the road. He was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken jaw because of the crash (wtf?). They let him go home and two weeks later he got a seizure again, and this time the doctors found a congenital vascular disorder in his head, a
cerebral cavernoma. He had to decide whether he wanted a risky surgery, or spend the rest of his life with someone by his side because of the risk of seizures. He chose the surgery, but he was scared he would never be able to walk again, especially because his little brother is bound to a wheelchair with cerebral palsy, and has the mind of a 1 year old. But he recovered, and won a whole lot afterwards. The end
