L'Equipe reports Tinkov has offered Contador a €2mln bonus if he wins the Tour.

Contador should have already enough motivation though to win this tour.

The GC favourites prepared the race carefully enough not to be too stressed and Saxo Tinkoff sports director Philippe Mauduit made it clear Alberto Contador was relaxed before the cobbled stage.
"I cannot even say that the rain will be an issue on the cobbles for Alberto rides pretty well on them. He is technically comfortable. But in spite of the work we have done on this stage, you can never be sure. You can always crash, suffer a mechanical but were confident."

Maybe Oleg should offer the team something

They re getting some flak but their job this first week is to keep Alberto safe, fresh & relaxed....seems to be working so far...Alberto looks like a diiferent person to last year ...he smiles all the time, is very confident

There is more to being a good team mate than sitting with your leader on a 800m climb

Great post Webbie.

Contador didn't get the memo in the first stage in Pais Vasco though:D

Nibali got it though :p

When Contador attacked and Nibali followed on the last hill his average power output was 400W. His average cadence was 85rpm pretty much perfect.

Then when Nibali attacked in the last 2km he averaged 500 watts, with a average cadence of 100rpm, which corresponds perfectly.

and during the day 220w average, 70rpm also corresponds.

Wasn't an "attack" from Contador though. Just a slight acceleration. Keep in mind the best climbers average 410-430 W on 30 minutes climbs. 30 minutes. If Contador attacked he would have had a much higher power output ( like 600-700 W) and maybe 90-95 rpm instead of 85. So slighty higher cadence but MUCH higher power output, not corresponding with your calculation.

Yea it was more like a acceleration. There are limits to you're rpm when climbing out of the saddle obviously. Kinda hard to do 120rpm when dancing on the pedals :p It can be done though when staying seated like Froome does when he attacks.

Quote about Froome: "
But even more wonder have raised the pedaling cadences of 120-130 RPM expressed by Froome in the three short (15-20") accelerations that demolished the opponents.

If you want to accelerate violently on an uphill incline, even in a car, you need to downshift the gears and increase the number of "engine revs", in order to express the maximum power in a quick time.
Given the acceleration and speed (almost double that of the opponents) developed by Froome, I estimate an average power of about 700W for those 20", which correspond to an ideal cadence of 125 RPM. So the choice of Chris is the best, if you want to drop rivals off your wheel.

I doubt money motivates Berto.....

Maybe not, but he can distribute the money to his team mate. Now, they will be the happy camper. Happy camper team will turn themselves inside out for their leader. :D

Contador is now 5th position. Not bad for car position tomorrow. Btw, what's up with Froome? crashed when no one is crashing? De javu of Dauphene. Maybe he should start looking straight instead of reading his power meter all the time.

Nervous about tomorrow stage. It's going to rain, I hope contador and the rest of TS make it safely without loosing time to other GC contender.

You obviously didn't see the crash, rider infront took out his wheel by trying to avoid his teammate. Nothing anyone could do. Also a Movistar and Belkin rider went down at the same time although in their own accident.

Great to see Alberto is now 5th, good for the car position in tomorrow's stage:):):)

Yes could be important for him, although I hope no Gc riders really have to need the car for an emergency.

Correct, and CF was also in the right spot -- near the front, a little off to the side. He was doing everything he was supposed to do. Only Sagan would have made it through without crashing. :D

From the Tinkoff site:

Alberto Contador finished today’s stage without any misfortunes and moved to fifth place in the overall classifications. The captain of Tinkoff-Saxo was happy with the result:

“The last days has been nervous with great risk throughout the stages. And today the crosswind was a factor as well forcing us to be well positioned. My feeling is that I wasn’t further down than 20th position in the peloton during the entire stage. That kept me safe and is a direct result of the work of my teammates. We didn’t crash but we had to “eat” a lot of wind to keep our positions. I gained two positions today, which means that we’ll have our team car closer to us”, said Contador.

Tomorrow’s 5th stage will challenge the riders with cobblestone sections. The cobbles, the forecasted rain and the endless fight for positions means that the GC favorites risk losing time on the stage. Alberto says that the most important is to concentrate and hope for the best.

“I will cross my fingers for tomorrow – it will be a really difficult day. The weather forecast is very bad. Already without bad weather it will be a complicated stage but with rain it will be like ice-skating with bikes. We will have winds of about 30 km/h, which might cut the peloton into pieces even before the cobblestones. But we are concentrated and we’ll ride the sections together as a team”, Alberto tells.

In any case, Contador says he feels very well after the first and very tricky stages of Tour de France 2014.

“Right now I’m really happy about my shape and with the work we’re doing as a team. For now, everything has been as good as it gets”, concludes Contador.

Any predictions for tomorrow? I'm really worried, got a bad feeling about the stage. I think it's not at all unlikely Alberto will be out of contention after tomorrow. Hope I'm wrong.
