I dont understand the Froome talk at all.

He is out of the race.

Sky has lost one dom.

Porte is not Froome.

Porte is in contention because of the strong team tht Sky has.

If Pore is isolated, he will struggle to hang on with Nibbles in longer climbs.

let us wait for today's stage to begin before speculating who has the best team. the best team will be making the race today.

Maybe you are right. But we don't know until this stage is done - why? Because you are making judgement on when Porte was riding for Froome or Wiggins and blowing himself up in the process e.g. AX3 Domains (where distanced Quintana anyway but paid for his effort the following day).

Porte does not strike me as the explosive type so longer climbs should suit him better than stage 8 did. Anyhow lets see what he can do when he is a protected rider with good form. I think he has the form so it will be interesting !

I don't see Porte being a worse climber than Nibali but can he hold it together for three weeks ? Nibali has proven he can do that. Porte can also thank Thomas who did great on the cobbles for him. Judging by what we saw of Astana two stages ago, Nibali could be more isolated than Porte. Nibali's team disappeared pretty quickly when Saxo started driving the pace.

Porte alone is stronger than Kreuziger and Roche together.

Apart from that off-day he always has. He migth b better than both on his good days, but that one off-day last year isolated Froome very early on one stage that could have costed him the Tour if not Movistar had been chickens riding for 2nd place.

Richie is a totally different rider than in 2011. I mean, he dropped AC like a stone on Ax3 last year and was going back and forth on Alpe to bring some snacks to Froome.
I know he has been invisible this year but surely he can do something. He climbed better than Armstrong on Madone.

And he got dropped on the 1st climb another day. Thats his problem: inconsistency

Im so proud of him that he trained so hard over this winter,it should pay-off and he should reveal once again his exceptional talent.

I agree. I so hope he can pull it off. If he can bring back this gap he completely deserves the win.

Let me rephrase: he has never done a GT without having at least one off-day

Y'all are too hard on Porte, IMO. :(

He may very well be too inconsistent, but other than his current season, I don't see too much evidence of that in GTs. There simply isn't enough to go on, IMO

2010 - pretty consistent throughout the Giro.
2011 - Transitional year. No risks. Not committed to the team, either.
2012 - He wasn't a protected rider. Not prepared enough for a result, either, though. Did what he had to do, but not much else. He soft-pedaled the first TT because of team orders. Unlike Rogers who tried at first.

2013 - possibly one off-day, which he himself denies. It's also possible that he just did too much work early on, as the race was definitely on, and Kennaugh had crashed. The rest of the team sans Dawg was an utter disgrace, so Porte had to do all the work. I thought he managed his losses pretty well, though, once he got dropped, until Sky made him throw in the towel.

Whatever happens, happens...a lot is uncertain about today, no point getting overly optimistic yet... Fingers crossed for Contie and the team
