This is why I use my own ranking system based on who wins the monuments and the tour.

And your ranking system is only meaningful to you :).

I would also prefer some races be scored differently but that is totally irrelevant to who wins as it is a UCI contest and they assign the points.

Meanwhile Valverde is most likely to prevail considering the characteristics of the races left to score points in. I'm sure that will make many happy on these boards  Actually I predict massive amounts of whinging and gnashing of teeth!

Meanwhile maybe Alberto can somehow pull it off which would be a major coup considering he missed scoring in his major objective of the season. Regardless he has had a stellar season even by his standards.

Really? Valverde is generally lambasted on this forum. I do think this season he has been a more attacking rider then in previous. Was pretty impressed with him at the Tour when he was dropped numerous times but kept coming back.

Disregarding anything clinic related he is, if not a man for all seasons, a man for most of them.

We all know that AC is quite stubborn and if his objective is the spot No. 1 in the WT ranking He will fight for it and will give a really good fight. I dont think that Bala is going to take it that easy.

I put my money on Contador to keep being the #1 and to get Le Velo D'Or this year too.

BTW is quite amazing how Bala can hold his form for such a long time

Did you miss the sarcasm emoticon? Anyway, I think it's cool that AC and Bala are fighting this thing out till the end.

Yes I was being sarcastic. Bala in reviled on this forum without good cause IMO. Personally I think he is a heck of a bike racer, only missing that <1/2% in 3 week tours.

Indeed it is cool that the two guys that have swapped top spot throughout the entire year will fight it out to the very last race. We the fans are the beneficiaries :).

For me the points system isn't fair.Tirreno earns as much points as LBL....Maybe a LBL victory should earn 120 points or something like this.

Tirreno earns *more* points than LBL, as you can get points for every stage (and the winner usually does get points there).

The return to the old, Bergamo finish has done Contador no favours.
Those of us old enough to remember will recall mostly bunch sprints of various sizes. (though never large)

Here are the Bergamo winners, 1995-2003, that should give a bit of a clue.

1995 Gianni Faresin (ITA) Lampre-Panaria
1996 Andrea Tafi (ITA) Mapei-GB
1997 Laurent Jalabert (FRA) ONCE
1998 Oscar Camenzind (SUI) Mapei-Bricobi
1999 Mirko Celestino (ITA) Team Polti
2000 Raimondas Rumšas (LTU) Fassa Bortolo
2001 Danilo Di Luca (ITA) Cantina Tollo-Acqua e Sapone
2002 Michele Bartoli (ITA) Fassa Bortolo
2003 Michele Bartoli (ITA) Fassa Bortolo

The rumour is that Contador is sick, due to food poisoning. That's what Pawel Gadzala says. He can't confirm it though.

Paweł Gadzała ‏@8aldwin 16 min.
Paweł Poljański DNS in Il Lombardia. Food poisoning it seems, other riders also affected - Tinkoff-Saxo, Katusha and CCC Polsat Polkowice.

Contador was realy good in LBL '10 and the form he had in that year wasn't his most dominant form.

Anyways he closed the gap on andy and gilbert, and he was the only one who was able to do it so fast. Then he just followed wheels for the sake of vino. With some luck he could have won that race.

Does Contador value Lombardia above the #1 ranking? He absolutely should. We'll know when he tries to get away before the last punchy climb. If he is content to just follow wheels and minimize the points Valverde gains on him, that would be very disappointing.
