Everyone "almost" knows Bertie is my fav rider. I have posted and defended him on here more than anyone.
I have relished going over the same old debates/agument's . I enjoy telling it like it is.
The fact I switched to the dark side [ froome /sky] for a bit of fun I thought was fine.
We all know that bertie is the greatest GT rider [Merckx apart] and we all know I am always right

Come on Ray! There's more carbon in your garage than in the mountains of West-Virginia . You know your stuff, no doubt. Just keep it light. The Bertie fans are rabid; he wins, and the discussion is about him vs. Eddy for all-time best. He loses and it's "oh my God, oh my God"...it's a fun thread. It's one of the best threads, with passion and drama...a soap opera .
All there's to do is to keep it light, be a little sarcastic, and recognize that Bertie's fans won't change. He has a HUGE following, his aggressive style is attractive. Stay cool or stay away. Believe me: the missionary attitude doesn't work on CN forums. So take a back seat and enjoy Bay(Bertie) Watch. Maybe Laflo will come running on the beach in her red bikini .

It's an opinion. But if the why is age, then it's a very poor argument.
That's the thing with great riders (or footballers, or whatever): just because they were great riders that doesn't mean they will be good trainers, good directors or anything for that matter.

That's the thing with great riders (or footballers, or whatever): just because they were great riders that doesn't mean they will be good trainers, good directors or anything for that matter.

Agreed. The thing that has always gotten to me about Team Sky is that it's like everything seems already written, so that even the so-called pundits take it as the Bible. But that's not the cycling the same "Monsieur P-R" even likes!

In today's sport it's taken much less to fuel conspiracy theories.

Alberto was in Belgium today at a Sportful sponsor event, he said in an interview that he feels so good, on Monday he wanted to call the team to say he changed his mind and would ride FW

That was a joke . But that's how Contador fans over-react all the time. And it's cute. Even if you disagree. It's like Contador is Italian...the drama...betrayals (Lance and the bordure), the misfortune and resurrection (Giro '15 - Mortirolo). It's cool. Gotta love it. Of course he's no Eddy. Merckx simply is the greatest athlete ever: better than Michael Jordan, Carl Lewis, Emil Zatopek, Joe Montana, Pele. It's a shame that worldwide, he is not as recognized as he should be. I saw Eddy Merckx once, riding, exuding something, and no one has that. But let's recognize hat Bertie is a major player...when I go up a climb and lift my arse up the saddle, I have images of Contador, dancing on the pedals. It's something. Then I end up Jan Ullrich, flat on the bike, grinding it out .

Bertie is great, no doubt, but he's too much a GT specialist for me to put him up there with the greats. Nibali on the other hand...

Oh, and Hinault > Merckx (but that's for another thread).

Yeah hes the greatest GT rider of all time arguably, and definitely by far the greatest rider of our generation.

Refering to Merckx and Hinault please remember it was a different time and cycling was far less competetive back then keep that in mind.

Opinions are like asses: everyone has one. Problem is that often times some of them are valued way above others, just because its owner was once, for instance, a rider. So the problem isn't really in Eddy, but in all the media.

Eddy said something a year or two ago that I thought really interesting. He said, "Everybody thinks I'm so great because of what I did on the bike when I was young, but, really, I'm not the young man who did all that. I look back on that young man and I don't even know who he was. I know it was supposed to be me but I don't recognize myself in him. I'm not that person anymore."

That said, I don't see how anybody can seriously maintain that the Eddy Merckx of old wasn't the greatest GT rider and bike racer ever, and by a wide margin.

Just to bring this back on topic (see what I did there? ), I'm sure Contador is quite happy with his life, and with his results, more or less, but I'm equally sure he'd much prefer to have been Eddy Merckx, or at least to have the results of Merckx.

My only point is, and pay close attention now. IF Merckx rode now instead of when he did, he wouldnt have had those results thats all im saying.
