A shame about the bad luck, and it's amazing that he still will go down as a top 5 greatest cyclist of all time despite it. Realistically, he should have won 5 Tours (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011) with a very strong shot at 2012, 2014, and 2016 if not for crashes, the incredibly strict enforcement of the clenbuterol test which goes counter to more recent treatment of similar cases (sorry about the clinic stuff - not my main point). That would have given him 5 Tours, 3 Giros, 3 Vueltas and it easily could have been 8 Tours, 3 Giros, and 3 Vueltas. That he's retiring with 2/2/3 officially hurts, but the amount of adversity he's faced al- and how he's handled it, is a huge reason he is who he is, Alberto Contador, El Campion.
Side note: I do recognize that Froome could easily have 2011 Vuelta, 2012 Tour, and 2014 Tour, which would put him at 6 Tours and 2 Vueltas.
But, coulda woulda shoulda for both of them. I supposed I'm the rare fan, but I think they're both amazing athletes and all-time greats. Contador is the man I cheer for though. Every time. At a loss for what to do now.
