I'm sure Riis will do anything possible to keep him safe. He's too valuable.

But what can Bjarne do? He can't go and catch Alberto before he falls. And last year Alberto was just as valuable as he is now, and yet Alberto still crashed multiple times.

As stated before, keep him in front with the whole team protecting him.
It's obvious this won't rule out crashes.
But still lowering the chances he will be involved.

I don't want it to happen. I can't see you sadface like this :(

Riis said that he took a chance in having the team ride mid-pack in the earlier stages in hopes of saving energy for the later mountainous stages. It was a gamble that failed badly. I'm quite certain he learned from this mistake.

Unless Bjarne is an complete idiot, the whole team in Eneco will be forced to be in the top 20 at all times no matter what it costs to avoid any kind of accident. ;)

You have to remember Ac's attn span is non existant. I am sure Riis will tell him over and over to be in the front but him remembering is not likely. I can recall when they did a team car a few years ago on a mountain stage. They had to remind AC every 5 secs it was not time to attack yet like he was 5 years old. It was embarrassing to listen to. He is lucky he was not in this years Tour with his awareness he would have lost 20 minutes in crashes.

ya the guy can't ride on the peloton if his life depended on it, he just fluked his way onto the end of every GT he has ridden since 07 with a win on a all of them cept 1. fluke, pure fluke

I've never really weighed in on the radio debate, but what you just wrote there puts me firmly in the no radio camp. I don't read that to be evidence of limited attention span. I read that as an attacking rider wanting to exploit his preferred terrain for maximum result. Now, I wonder if this was during the 2009 Tour, because if it was (and I seem to recall that it was), then I remember WHY he wanted to attack and WHY he was being told it wasn't time yet....

Considering what happened at last year's Tour even though it want his fault maybe this does make sense.. just a point though as I do doubt such a statement is true.

What exactly are you referring to? The results of Riis deciding for the team to ride at mid-pack to supposedly save energy due to the widely recognized weakness of a team that was stretched to it's limits and a ride leader with an often mentioned but seemingly just as often forgotten, exhausting Giro in his legs? Additionally, crashes happen, look at Wiggins' 2011 Tour.
