But what about before the Olympics as referenced in the live video on race day? So the rumour that AG tested positive for a banned substance after or before the Olympics is false?

NW

I didn't think it was a rumor but a fact : he tested positive to whatever it was before the Olympic games but those were the days when all US athletes that were needed in the national teams and tested positives were pardoned by the national authorities on the matter. (That policy seems to me to have been in effect as recently as just a few years ago).

Here is the "official version"

No, it's true. The Coors ended being a warm-up race for the Olympics. A few people dropped out early, as I recall. Maybe even Alexi. He got tested positive for ephedra, which carried something like a 30-day suspension back then.

He claimed that it was from some contaminated herbal tea (probably untrue) and the USCF rescinded the suspension, probably fully aware that he was one of the best shots at medaling in '84.

basiclly an uber catagory carrer doper. Took a gold in the olympic medal against clean rider. Substance abuser and drug addict. Irresponsible Father plus he feels sorry for himself. Joe whats not to like about a guy like alexi.

That's my Flicker!

He loves to polish Lance's ball, but he's ready to dump on anybody else.

I knew Alexi. Not well, but better than many. He did not have an easy life growing up. His father, Jasjit, was insanely hard on his kids. He may have even beaten them, I don't know.

Alexi did not have a warm, winning personality. But he was always a straight shooter. If that story about him withholding Power Bars from Davis is true, where do you think it came from? A mind reader? No, you dipsh!t. It could have only come from Alexi. Nobody else knew what he had in his pockets that day and if he was or wasn't hungry.

And I have no doubt that Alexi would be glad to tell you exactly why he did what he did. Probably something along the lines of the movie "The Deer Hunter". Ever see that one? Remember when they go hunting and one guy forgets his boots and Robert deNiro has an extra pair? If not, go watch it again.

As far as "uber category career dopers" go, I think the king (or is that queen, you man-crush kind of boy) of that would be Lancie-poo.

I love the "Deer Hunter" too. If my Lance is guilty he will pay. I was not following cycling during the 84 Olympics or after until 2005. I quit watching when LeMond started being top tier. I thought it bogus that an American won the tour. After Lance retired I became extremely interested in cycling. I was again not interested in his arrogance. I found out about Alexi from a friend who was a national champion at the time and knew all the players in the cycling game. He told me about Bauer and
the doping of Grewal. With Tyler Hamilton who would he give his medal to who was clean.. Grewal beat clean riders and holds his medal. The stuff about his kids well that is from Alexis own velonews article. This has nothing to do with Lance. It does have to do about drug addiction which I know about from relatives. Also like I have put out there before Alexi needs to make amends with his family. If they accept his amends fine. If he is unable to do that he has still done well for trying. If he wants to compete then he can after he has made his amends.
Lance will have to take responsability for any wrong doing if he has done so.

Flicker, I think you need to seek the help of mental health professional. That was the most disjointed, rambling post I think I have seen in these forums.

And by the way, who made you God? You're the one who gets to say who can race now?

Les Earnest's take on Grewal

"1984 was a banner year for cycling -- after a 72 year drought, U.S. riders won eight Olympic medals. It was the year that the U.S. Cycling Federation (USCF) adopted detailed medical control regulations for the first time. It was also a year of unsurpassed political skullduggery among the officers and directors of the Federation." MORE

If you don't know who Les Earnest is, look him up. After doing so, consider reading the rest of the weighty essay he wrote on Alexi Grewal and conflicts of interest within the USOC and USCF related to doping, here.

I believe that's Davis on the left in the Gold leader's jersey of the Coors Classic. Then comes an unidentified foreign pro. Then comes Gavin Chilcott, a California rider whose results never quite matched his reputation. Then Alexi is wearing some prescription glasses. After him we see Alan McCormack, the Irish pro who delighted US crowds by going crazy after primes in criterium stages of the Coors. Don't recognize the guy with the cap -- must be another foreign pro. Behind him it looks a lot like Bruce Whitesel, a talented Colorado rider although I don't remember him riding for ADR. You can just make out a 7-11 logo on the sleeve and leg of a hidden rider. I don't recognize the guy in the orange jersey, sorry.

Hope that helps.

I think that's actually Andy in the gold. And that was the points jersey. The Leaders jersey was, as you likely now remember, was Red and White.

Gavin runs the BMC team now.

You missed the most obvious guy. Who is the unknown rider with the funny rainbow stripes on his kit? Argentin!

I recognized only a couple of riders and after staring at this photo a while it suddenly dawned on me, they were all enjoying real chammies. Those were the days.

Made me feel all nostalgic and warm and fuzzy inside.

Yes and all this nostalgia due to a certain Lance Armstrong, Quizanos and the Governator of Colorado. Enjoy!

Excuse me dude. Would you like to see some photos of Americans racing in Europe in the 70s? Ask Och or Gavin.

my nostalgia just comes from grewal, and what i experienced in the past..

Nice, thanks for sharing. I wish I had been able to see the coors classic in SF in 1987 as I moved in 79. Epic, I am glad the race is coming back in another form. Good luck to Grewal and his friends. As an old man myself I know how hard those comebacks can be,God speed.

Ah, thanks. That must have been the year that the world's were in Colorado and all the pros came to the Coors to use it as altitude training.

Yes, some others beat you to the first two. You think that's Bauer with the hairnet right behind McCormack? Certainly could be. The right build and height. Tough to say for sure.

I think the Stars and Stripes belong to Steve Hegg.

I'm presuming that this must be the next year's Coors and that the rainbow jersey belongs to Moreno Argentin, whom I believe won it in Colorado, but I'm certainly open to corrections. Funny -- he's in his big ring, while everybody else is in their little ring!

Can't ID the other Bianchi rider. Looks kind of like Gavin, but I don't think Gavin was that big, nor did he ride for Bianchi to my knowledge.

Fun photos!

EDIT: Look how nice and flat everyone's back is -- unlike Lance the hunchback. Whoever coached him didn't know squat except how to dope.

While all the hate towards Grewal? Yeah he's definitely not mainstream and was a bad boy before it was cool (anyone remember the "I **** on Belgium" headline?) but so what? The guy is an amazing climber with a huge engine, and if Ned Overend's performances are anything to go by, I doubt Grewal would go out the back on the first stage if he actually trains for the race. Why begrudge the guy for wanting to have a goal to motivate and excite him, even if it's extreme? He's an Olympic champion and you all talk about him like he beat-up some junior at your local Wednesday Night Worlds.

Alexi Grewal is indelibly part of the rich history of road cycling, and his possible return to the sport is hardly a net negative, especially if it drives more mainstream interest in the race, even if it's coverage that was catalyzed by a seemingly oddball comeback attempt.

Do you guys even know him, or are you just going by what you've read other places?

No he's not.

Hmm, based on the sunglasses, I'm going to guess that it's Roy Knickman rather than Bauer. Those are big, bleedin' Bolle sunglasses, and I think Bauer was partial to Rudy Projects.

It's Janus Kuum on the front. I think the Bianchi guy migth be Jesper Worre. Glen Sanders in the stars and bars.
