That's the drawback from going after results 4 weeks a year.

Edit: I'm more impressed by van Dijk who hasn't raced for a big team since 2004, had a ban in 2006 and still made the list

Or for being only 25 years?

I know Valverde stands out, but Sagan points tally is pretty unbelievable as well.

PCS has an "all time" ranking: I have no idea how comprehensive their list of historic results is, but they have Valverde just moved in to the second best of all time.:

1 1 - Merckx Eddy 2599

2 3 ▲1 Valverde Alejandro Movistar Team 1348

3 2 ▼1 Hinault Bernard 1271

4 4 - Cipollini Mario 1150

5 5 - De Vlaeminck Roger 1133

6 6 - Boonen Tom 1083

7 7 - Kelly Sean 1007

8 8 - Cavendish Mark Dimension Data 1002

9 9 - Moser Francesco 989

10 10 - Van Looy Rik 977

11 11 - Zabel Erik 973

12 13 ▲1 Contador Alberto Trek - Segafredo 962

13 12 ▼1 Cancellara Fabian 953

14 14 - Coppi Fausto 946

15 15 - Anquetil Jacques 943

16 19 ▲3 Gilbert Philippe Quick-Step Floors 939

17 16 ▼1 Binda Alfredo 936

18 17 ▼1 Sagan Peter Bora - Hansgrohe 932

19 18 ▼1 Bartali Gino 902

20 20 - Greipel André Lotto Soudal 882

21 21 - Petacchi Alessandro 881

22 22 - Maertens Freddy 869

23 23 - Gimondi Felice 861

24 24 - Jalabert Laurent 857

25 25 - Saronni Giuseppe 844

26 26 - Indurain Miguel 783

27 27 - Freire Oscar 732

28 28 - Museeuw Johan 730

29 29 - Rominger Tony 722

30 30 - Rebellin Davide Kuwait - Cartucho.es 718

Changes are during April

lol at Armstrong in 19th place, even though they are counting his seven TdF wins. A full 17 places behind Rebellin

It's not comprehensive at all. Cyclingranking has a more thorough database and on their list Valverde has just cracked the top ten. Top three is realistic by the end of his career, but he won't surpass Kelly and Merckx.

Historical rankings are fun but they have little value. You cannot really compare different decades, cyclist have more longevity now, etc.

I mean, does Rigoberto Uran belong in the top-200 of historical cycling? Haimar Zubeldia? Are they better than Nairo Quintana? (who ranks #282).

Was Beat Zberg (#122) better cyclist than Denis Menchov (#135), Thor Hushovd (#124), etc?

I don't think Valverde should lead by that much. It's his 15th season as a Pro rider, but he has just won 3 races that are ranked 1.HC or higher (Flèche Wallonne, LBL, San Sebastian) and has never been a World Champion.
He has a combined of 44 starts in Amstel, Lombardia, WC (9 times top 10 on 11 participations), Milano-San Remo and Strade Bianche, races that should be within his reach, yet he hasn't won a single time.

Also, only winning 1 of the 21 GT he started, is just not enough. There was no Contador, no Nibali, no Leipheimer, no Franck Schleck, Andy quitted after 6 stages, no Menchov... and his biggest rivals, Evans and Samu Sanchez had never won a GT (at the time).

Yet, what annoys me most, he has never made a single doping confession. That's why I won't respect him (for now).

I really like the CQ Ranking for the year, but the all-time shows how much it overvalues ssr's and small stages. Maybe a multiplier for number and variety of monuments/GTs would work. JMIO

PCS has clearly been updating its database with older results. Its current top ten all-time:

1 MERCKX Eddy 3751.7
2 MOSER Francesco 2060.4
3 KELLY Sean 2015.7
4 DE VLAEMINCK Roger 1932.2
5 HINAULT Bernard 1921.8
6 ANQUETIL Jacques 1898.9
7 VALVERDE Alejandro 1685.7
8 VAN LOOY Rik 1678.8
9 COPPI Fausto 1474.7
10 SARONNI Giuseppe 1470.6

Valverde is the only active rider in the top 20, but Sagan, Rebellin, Gilbert, Cavendish, Greipel, Froome, and Nibali are all between 22 and 38.

Still don't get how Rebellin gets that high on these lists, although he has many top ten places in UCI Road World Cup races.

By sheer longevity. He's in his 28th season as a pro. These lists are based on quantity as much as quality and nobody has more quantity than Rebellin.

If a former monument winner like him still has the drive to get out of bed and train enough to keep a pro contract at the age of 47, that achievement should not be underestimated

For such a “non winner” Evans was he is pretty high up, all those top 5 in stage races and wins adds up

For context, here are some riders who are younger than Rebellin (from that top 100 list):

Robbie McEwan
Paolo Bettini
Alessandro Petacchi
Oscar Freire
Alexandre Vinokourov
Jan Ullrich
Danilo Di Luca
Jens Voigt

Any list that ranks André Greipel higher than Louison Bobet (won 4 different "monuments", Bordeaux-Paris, world championships, 3x TDF, Paris-Nice and Dauphiné Libéré) is majorly flawed.

That fact alone should automatically self destruct any list due to massive computational failure.

Lol, how does this even happen? Are those the only results Bobet ever got?

Their results list isn't complete for the older races. Just take a look at Bobet in 1954 - https://www.procyclingstats.com/rider/louison-bobet/1954
