When I look at Ivan, Ivan and his family, Ivan posting pics of his family or kids - then his descending skills make sense.
You always have those more cautious guys and those (other) close to kamikaze guys. But if Basso's "skills" would be really as bad as some people try to say, then he would never be able to win Giro, or even beeing a pro.

This whole decent-skill issue is totally overrated and exaggerated anyway, in both directions.
Can also be seen in prediction games. As soon as road goes down at last km, 80% predict Sanchez or that other Sanchez for win, just because they did some "outstanding" performance and won on 1 out of ca.33,5 chances on similar stages. :D

The only rider I would recommend to stop riding a bike is that turtle from Columbia.

Fränk Schleck: Technological Doping - joke or reality? (Gazzetta)

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Fränk Schleck may have artificially distorted his jersey on his chest, which would have given him an aerodynamic advantage. This technique is prohibited by the anti-doping rules of the UCI.

According to experts, this technique could offer an advantage o 15-20 Watts, that is to say around 2 seconds per km. This could possibly cast a shadow on Fränk Schleck's overall victory at the Critérium International.

Yeah, experts like our old friend at the 53x12

Patdown testing next?

Sorry, I don't follow - who do you mean?

The Gazzetta article looks for real ... but if he really did wear this and it is prohibited (the Gazzetta article even mentions the precise rule, art. 1.3.033), then how come none of the chaperones seemed to notice?

spot the author ;)

probably one of the more ironic articles regardless of the actual veracity

The Gazzetta article pretty copied the last paragraph of that ... all very weird  makes me think Gazzetta isn't for real either. Although it'd be a pretty bad joke

"this artificial alteration of the aerodynamic profile could very well save up to 15-20w (corresponding to about 2” per km) at a speed of approximately 50 km/h.
If indeed that is the case, Vasili Kiryienka, the second rider in the GC with a gap of 13”, would have all the rights to protest."

"Un espediente che, secondo gli esperti, a una media di 50 orari apporterebbe un beneficio di 15-20 watt, traducibili in circa 2" al km. Il lussemburghese (12° nella crono a 24" da Klöden) ha vinto la corsa francese con 13" di vantaggio sul bielorusso Kiryienka (che nella crono aveva fatto meglio di lui di 7")."

I don't know if this is just a joke for the day, but even if it is true, how does something on your chest really make you that much more aerodynamic? Is this any different than the weird skinsuits that Garmin started wearing last year?

I saw it at Biciciclismo first and thought it was their joke, then followed the link to La Gazzetta and thought Biciciclismo had fallen for it. Then I saw the link to the Marca story, with more details, and it has my head hurting, especially after watching the La Gazzetta linked video. The one thing that kind of bugged me was a comment at the Gazzetta website saying Westra had used the same thing at De Panne?

"All equipment in clothing which may affect the performance of the corridor is prohibited," says the article 1.3.033 of the UCI regulations. "It is expressly prohibited to non-essential elements in the costumes designed to reduce the penetration resistance in the air or to change the physiognomy of the corridor." Lighter impossible, but it is so critical attitude of most of the Schleck as the lack of professionalism of the commissioners, who saw nothing unusual
.

So now I actually looked for a story, and came up with something Luxembourgish about it being a Camelback? Because of the hydration demands of a nine minute TT? The video there shows him from the start position, with the obvious bulge.

By the way, the Ferrari blog post was from March 28, so that's not April Fools.

It would be cool if it was a multilingual prank, but there's not that much solidarity in cycling. By the way, the Marca story was written by a guy who didn't realize the Tuttobiciweb story about Visconti retiring was a prank, so I don't think he's thinking in terms of the day.

Gotta go - the Bronx Zoo Python has taken over Ryan Seacrest's website

Maybe they will be starting to wear those ugly "aero-dynamical bottoms" that long distance speed skaters used before they got banned by ISU.

(heh, I can't find any images of it on the internet, maybe I have been dreaming or have DT or something)..

Magnus Backstedt spotted it while doing Sunday's UK Eurosport commentary.
We had a few slo mos and it certainly looked to be the case.
While saying it would offer an advantage, he stopped short of calling it cheating..........which it clearly was, just as having a camel back is unlawful.
That Gazzetta rule citation, I presume.

Still, you get away with what you can.

I would be wary of using it at the Tour, though.

The leopard accusations get funnier and funnier. Engines, bearings and now Franks chestwear.

Frank would be better off investigating some energy into designing something that helped him descent.
