Op-ed: Mercier calls for revolution against McQuaid, Verbruggen

The lack of comments by most of the peloton regarding the Armstrong saga suggest that the omerta is still alive and well and that the peloton is still ruled by fear. There is no small amount of irony in the fact that the sport is led today by a man who received a lifetime ban from Olympic competition for an act of willful deception and fraud by racing the Rapport Tour in apartheid South Africa during an international boycott. I also raced the Rapport Tour, but Nobel laureate Nelson Mandela was the head of state, not B.J. Vorster. Mr. Vorster was the head of the department of justice in South Africa when Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison.

The UCI today appears to be governed in a similar manner as the apartheid regimes, ruled with oppression and fear. Many of today’s riders seem to be fearful of criticizing the UCI potentially and exposing themselves to repercussions.

i think this is a good analysis.
but fear for the uci is just half of the story.
the other half being that many riders simply stay silent because they still dope their way up the mountains.

This thread deserves a bump.

Since we are talking about clowns and liars this recent set of events deserves note.

July 28, 2012

World cycling boss Pat McQuaid is confident there will be no positive drug tests for cyclists at Olympics

Just six days later:

August 3, 2012

London 2012: Russian cyclist Victoria Baranova sent home over doping

But, what was Pat smoking?

In the run-up to the Olympics, prospective Olympic cyclists were testing positive right and left:

17 April 2012

Russia’s top cyclist caught doping before London 2012

And, of course, the piece de resistance was the Olympic road win by convicted blood doper Vinokourov.

Pat, you deserve the clown hat. You earned it.

Pat's tried a Marion Jones defense. "No new positives. The sport of cycling is clean!"

-They got rid of Gripper and got a far more compliant employee with Rossi. Pat's handling of the interview shows this.
-Pat confirmed they aren't performing as many tests.
-They confirmed Ashenden's claims of missing data from profiles, but then Pat launches a personal attack against Ashenden as the reason there's nothing wrong with missing data.

There's a huge story yet to be told when data goes missing off a profile. I mean, what could possibly be wrong with that? We won't know for a couple of years. But the zero positives is a strong clue.

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/video-rossi-and-mcquaid-hold-worlds-press-conference

And, finally, after years of no comment, we get this:

Cycling cannot move forward until Lance issue is resolved

Gripper had remained silent...

"Any organisation that is the subject of allegations such as these... in normal circumstances you would probably step down while an investigation was happening..."

Are we reminiscing about UCI buffoonery?

Here is a nice unbiased McQuaid quote from 2008:

“I know Contador and the people around him and I know that he is a clean and honest rider,”

Or what about this editorial from an anonymous bone idle ****er at the UCI? Surely its just an unfortunate coincidence that the writing style is similar to that of the UCI's dear leader.

"For the time being we must simply look at the source of these insinuations, which seriously tarnish the image of our sport and its leaders: this is a person who lacks all credibility and has no sense of responsibility..."

Edit: Anyone got a link to the UCIs statement about Silvia Schenk? That statement contains perhaps the finest example of the dear leaders writing style. I linked it here ages ago, but linkey no workey now.

Here's another fun one. When trying to snatch jurisdiction of the USPS conspiracy case, did the UCI tell the Texas court this little bit of history:

"We take his accusations very seriously. I received a copy of the email, I think at the beginning of May. It is the responsibility of the national federation to conduct an investigation and I asked the US federation to begin an inquiry. They requested US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) to make an inquiry and that is ongoing."

Is it me or does it sound like Anne is whistling past the graveyard and the spooky sky tomb? Nothing to see in this NEW and IMPROVED clean cycling.

Her quotes are disappointing for me. I don't have her level of confidence in the sport.

I had forgotten all about the lost samples. I wonder if they were somehow unique? Nooo, it couldn't be.

He adds that he would be happy to share his knowledge with the UCI.

‘I’m surprised I haven’t heard from them yet. I’ve been wanting to talk to them. They might not like what I did but, if they’re not interested in hearing what I did, that’s up to them. I’d be on the plane tomorrow if they want to hear from me.’

Hamilton does not know whether anyone at the UCI has read his book.
‘I’m not proud of what I did but it was an important book to write,’ he said. ‘It was almost like therapy, peeling through the layers and secrets and lies and cover-ups … The truth is the way to go.’

Hog, UCI probably followed up that Hamilton offer with as much enthusiasm as they pursued the inquiry into the suspicion index leak.......

regardless, try spelling her name correctly (Sylvia not Silvia) and you may find it :D

Now you know why my google skillz r so bad:eek:

As ridiculous as that press release is, it's not actually the one I was looking for. There was an Unrelenting Cringe International press release with an even higher clown component, released after the ethics committee finding...... Oh wait, maybe that was from Unintentional Comedy International?

Not that one but thanks for looking. There was some other epic rant with comments along the lines of "is the kind of person who only wants to cause trouble", which had a similar feel to the anti-landis editorial. The rant I'm talking about lapsed suddenly into the first person part way through; something along the lines of "anyway what I really did was..." which made it pretty clear who the (semi literate) author was. Was Probably written in 2009 or later. Pretty sure it was a written press release.

Finally some articles going one step further. Why is there not a stronger media critique of the sport's administrator...!?

A History of Denial

"Not a hint of acknowledgment by the UCI that its own practices, procedures, independence and judgment are all in the dock as a result of the evidence gathered.

Usada doesn’t mince its words – it accuses the UCI of disdain and disinterest in its response to whistleblowers. McQuaid and Verbruggen are protective of their reputations. That is their right. But a sign of positive change on their part would be less litigation against their critics and more acknowledgment of the UCI’s shortcomings."

Patrick? Heinricous?

Where are you?

I know Pat can't read but someone at UCI should have told them what's happened.

Pretty sure that it's time for @PatMustGo to be changed to @PatWillGo, or better still @PatHasGone...

Only thing stopping the announcement is
1. the negotiations on an exit package, ie what remaining side roles will there be for H&P (some new world cycling event promotions perhaps?)
2. new leadership and finalizing announcements around "new initiatives to clean up cycling" - to take media emphasis away from 1 which everyone will want to bury

One could see the Richard Pound and David Millar comments in the past week as clear signals for candidacy by the way. Has Sylvia Schenk spoken in the media in the past week?

Story is now 7 days old. Getting from bad to worse. Time when real leadership counts.

WHERE IS OUR UCI TO LEAD CYCLING FORWARD???

No statements, other than "we're looking at our legal options".

If ever cycling needed leadership it's now. NEW Leadership.

I vehemently protest against the article in De Telegraaf of Thursday morning," he said

From the telegraaf:

SMS verkeer dat collega Hans Ruggenberg met Hein Verbruggen had, zal spoedig op de site van Telesport verschijnen.

so they are going to print his sms.

The "scumbag" witness quote of McQuaid was actually a direct steal from Murdoch only a day earlier, on twitter, when he commented on The News of the World phone hack victims as "scumbag celebrities".

Murdoch has copped huge flack for his twitter comment, and has since clarified his comment...

Interesting to see Pat replaying Rupert in light of the Sky connection. Almost as if Pat is saying Rupert I support you, I am your biggest fan...
