You had better get down to the NIKE store to claim your share of the remaining products. I have a feeling their "support" will last long enough to clear out the inventory. But then again; you might not have to fight crowds...

It is amazing how many other athletes have latched onto that stuff. Is it just the color scheme?

You might think the photo below is a photoshopped joke, but it's not. It is at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. It, plus Nike's support for Paterno, stayed up after Sandusky was sent to jail. After Sandusky was convicted even. It wasn't taken down until a month ago when the Freeh Report came out.

That's what Nike stands for. It's how they have always been.

Wow! American companies exploiting Asian workers? I'm shocked, just shocked!

You, sir, are correct. I will not buy a Nike product until they move out of China, and leave all of those poor people to fend for themselves, unemployed and starving to death.

China won't suffer.

Here is my robo-response from Nike today...

"Thank you for contacting Nike Inc. Investor Relations. *
*
Lance has stated his innocence and has been unwavering on this position.* As such, Nike plans to continue to support Lance and the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a foundation that Lance created to serve cancer survivors.
*
We greatly appreciate and value the varying feedback of our consumers and shareholders.* All feedback is taken into consideration when making not only business decisions but the sometimes tougher decisions/actions concerning members of the NIKE family.*
*
Kind regards,
*
Nike Inc., Investor Relations"

The last sentence gives me a glimmer of hope...however faint.

Possibly Nike could not dump Armstrong unless he breached a term of the sponsorship contract.

Refusing arbitration would not be an event that may trigger Nike to notify Armstrong of a breach of contract. Armstrong's lawyers would have made every sponsor aware if this was so.

But the sanctions that should arise (stripping of titles, disqualification for life etc.) would be events one would expect may cause Nike to act.

Not that I am worried about big brother or anything, but I received a response 40 min after posting that post.

Mine was identical to yours.

The line that jumps out is:

Lance has stated his innocence and has been unwavering on this position.

Boy that makes me feel better. But, if that is the standard, how come Nike isn't sponsoring OJ?

Then again, maybe some of these things explain it:

Actual Nike "Get High" T-Shirt (no kidding)

9728058-small.jpg

Actual Nike "Dope" T-Shirt (no kidding)

nike-6.0-just-do-it-dope-t-shirt-boston-mayor-thomas-menino-drug-use-black-red-150x150.jpg

And, it should be no surprise who the actual market is:

Nike shoes (prints) are found most often at crimescenes

Just like the Lance story, you can't make up stuff this crazy.

I copied DQs letter. :p
took out the Pre line....

and yes they are simply robo-sent.

The last line stood out to me like one being held hostage.....

There's more information you guys need to know before taking on Nike.

They are highly unlikely to respond to your e-mail with anything more than boilerplate. It also won't change them. You are going to need much more public persuasion and pressure to do that. But let's take a look at another angle to consider using if you're up for pressuring the almmighty swoosh.

When Steve Prefontaine was killed in 1975, the last known person to see him alive was his friend Frank Shorter.

In the 1976 Olympics, Frank Shorter was heavily favored to repeat as marathon champion. But he lost in stunning fashion to a previously unknown East German, Waldemar Cierpinski. Since Cierpinski was a complete unknown, it was highly suspected even at the time that Cierpienski and the DDR were using blood doping (blood packing it was called then) to cheat to win. When the DDR fell and it was revealed just how widespread the doping was, and Cierpinski's name appeared in the files uncovered by Werner Franke, it only added to the bitterness of Shorter's loss. Excellent link here.

But Shorter, best friend of Pre, wasn't out to change the record books, as much as help clean up sports. In 2000 he would help form USADA. And served as it's chairman until 2003.

I have to wonder if Nike even knows?

Gold medal post !!!

Thanks Alpe. Of course it is going to be boilerplate. After all, we sent it to IR.

Thanks for the data on Frank's 1976 Montreal experience.

I posted it earlier, but PRE and Lasse Viren fought an epic battle in 1972. Bowerman called it one of the greatest races ever. After turning the race into a race, PRE blew up at the line and came fourth.

Viren was later found to be blood doping just like Cierpinski in 1976.

Dave - Not so. This is one of the most oft-repeated statements that was never proven, and he never admitted it. There was never even "Lance like" proof that everyone knew was accurate, but were not official failed tests. Nothing like that. The closest thing is that he said he drank reindeer milk during training in an interview, which is a strange answer to a doping question for sure.

Having said that, it was highly suspected that Viren did blood dope in 1976. A teammate of his admitted to it, it was not explicitly against the rules at the time (though may be considered sporting fraud anyway). Viren also did the impossible in that after winning the 5k and 10k, a mere eighteen hours later he entered the marathon where he followed Shorter as planned for about 25k before fading and dropping out of sight of him (and Cierpinski). By nature he would have continued to fade and finish about 20th, but he ran a fairly quick last 10k to finish an impressive 5th in his first ever marathon. But he was a very talented, very shrewd runner with a perfect gait. So who knows?

Here's a link to a good SI article on Viren.

Those were some good days for USA track and field. I bet PRE would freak out with the current power that USA track and field have over the atheletes these days.

Galen Rupp gave USA distance running some more hope for the future.

It would be interesting, that is for sure.

It would also be interesting to see his reaction to the power that the sponsors have. Remember that Viren was almost barred from competition for holding up his shoes ('I had a blister').

It is a different world.

Most of the "Big" sponsors have been in for so long (through thick and thin). they kinda HAVE to stay involved at this point. For Nike, Trek or Oakley to abandon ship now would be akin to Assad joining the Syrian rebels.

Nike, Trek and Oakley are way past the point of no-return, so they will stay-put. No matter what any of you say up in Cañadah.

No doubt.

As for Canada, the only thing out of the Cdn Cycling ***'n thus far offers little hope in push back on the UCI.

Just a bunch of nonsense on how the sport has never been cleaner.

Nope, no doping in Canada.

Interesting, though, that CCES (USADA equivalent) has recently targeted some Masters cyclists.

I agree. Sponsors etc. ruined the Olympics. The real indication of that or the IN YOUR FACE indication of that was with the 1996 Atlanta games.
Basketball 1992 was just a intro.

That was enough for me.
