Ewan will struggle to win races this year I think. At the moment he's just a Matthews with five fewer seasons in his legs. That's not to say he will not be highly competitive on numerous occasions.

But in a thinly veiled swipe at the winner, O’Donnell accused Gillow of using her as a pacesetter after catching her out on the course.

“I don’t know if it was a drag race, I was in front so she was probably benefiting from having me just in front,” O’Donnell said.

“She made up all the damage on the way out and it’s very helpful to have someone to sit on the way back.

“She should be ashamed of herself that a full-time professional athlete sitting on an old woman with a job like me.

Matthews won eight races in three seasons and none of them really meant much until 2.5 seasons in. It is unlikely that Ewan will do much better, and his results will not necessarily match his ability and what he achieved as a junior/u23/amateur, that is simply the reality of being a 20 year old "sprinter" who is only third tier speed wise. So unless he goes full Moser...

Matthews had à rough time once he entered the pro ranks indeed and he still isn't as good as most expected, but those expectations we obviously too high. He had a really good season this year though and can still improve.

Ewan will have a hard time winning anything besides smaller races this year I expect. He is too small for a real sprinter, but he no doubt has the ability to become something special on selective courses. Im not sure what he will specialise in too though.

I think there is a lot of improvement left in Ewan. Inexperience cost him the Aussie Road title but we won't know whether he will make the transition to the top level and be competitive until he actually rides the best races and gets more experience. Early days yet.

Also with Matthews Rabobank didn't let him ride a GT, which does seem like a good choice now, but at the time might have stopped his faster progression. He also rode quite well in his first year, beating Kittel at Koln and winning at Stirling.
