Your application stack looks like this:

nginx cache<-->forum software on http server <--> database stack.

I know the nginx cache was good, it was either the http server running out of resources, or something about a database failure.

My guess is it was the database backend running out of resources as it could not handle the thundering herd of inserts/updates caused by Froome's ridiculous performance.

I'd be interested to know if I'm close. PM me if you guys don't want to post it publicly. I don't know why you would want to hide it because it isn't that important.

As said by Ferm and Susan - the mods have no way of knowing. We're not tech staff.

As per script, the mods will say they know nothing even if it was a downed server or someone accidentally pulled a plug. Some things are way too predictable

Said with a smile - but I'm in the eastern US, and the servers, and server techs are elsewhere in the Universe. I think GB somewhere.

Well most forums allow mod/admins to view the error logs or error tab in the admin panel, its all there in black and white.

On the other hand, this forum either blocks you all from viewing any of that or its mums the word on the error log.

Most of us are in the "other hand" group.

I actually understand a little of what you guys are talking about - but I ain't anywhere near the servers, nor any of the server logs, nor any of the server admins/techies.

In their defence they are meant to be moderators/forum admins not IT admins.

Well I'll have to disagree with you on that, most forums I have experienced with have more IT type people as part of the mod/admin group for a reason and those are forums that have nothing to do with anything related to IT or computers.

Loath as I am to disagree with the verified #1 member, in my pretty broad forum experience going back to the end of last century, I can think of only two mods/admins who were also techies, and they were both site owners. Mods/admins usually have very little or nothing to do with the tech side of things, which is why it usually takes a day or more to get a crashed forum back up and running.

We'll never know, the forum is run by an unknown person(s) on an unknown server powered by an unknown source in an unknown location using an unknown OS with an unknown hardware platform.

According to what I know, what happened was entirely beyond CN's control, and I'm sure that CN (and their advertisers) would not have been too thrilled by the massive drop in traffic with no forums running. But, in view of the size and importance of this pretty large forum to CN, it really wasn't too much to ask, or expect, some kind of reasonable input of information about what was happening and when CN expected things to be up and running again.

What did we get? One 'story' on the news page when the 'attack' was first announced, 19 or so days ago, and since then - zip, nada.

Oh, apart from the wonderful post at the top of this forum which nobody will have seen till today.
