For some reason Philipsen is doing suicidal descents in attacking the chase group when the lead of the race is uncatchable.

Campenaerts struggling to stay with the leaders.

This is going to be really close with also a golden km tmrw.
I expect Hermans to win it but can he put 8s into Wellens. he is faster for a goldem K sprint tmrw too tho. And then there's Schmid indeed but he doesn't look super fresh (Wellens doesn't either).

Hermans wins. Schmid probably takes the GC lead but the golden kilometre tomorrow will be decisive anyway. Hermans probably can't take the GC there anymore though.

For the record: the fractions of a second in the TT are Schmid then Wellens then Hermans, decent chance the tiebreaker will matter. If Schmid and Wellens end up in the same time tomorrow, 0.043 seconds will have decided the race!

Confirmed now - Schmid in the lead with Wellens in the same time and Hermans eight seconds down. Tomorrow's golden kilometre will be quite the duel...

Wellens was already on the limit with 50k to go, he was obviously just hoping to limit the damage in the end take the leaders jersey. Would've worked if he didn't stop pedalling just before the line. Would've ended on 3 seconds.
Tbf this is probably the best Wellens has ever done in the heat, to still have a good shot at overall victory is as much as he could have hoped for.

Yeah, he's not that bad in the heat anymore as before 2019, but I was a little bit scared that he was going to crack today because of it. 35 degrees is no joke for someone who doesn't handle it very well. So I can definitely live with that 2nd place in GC even tho 1st is that close.

Pure point wise they also got Campenaerts moving up 15 places in GC to 5th so that 235 points probably out of this race if they don't crash tmrw. They should definitely be happy with that.
