thanks for the vid jens_attacks. That was a great stage. It is my opinion that Beloki didn't really take full advantage of his strength that day and could have distanced LA. Mayo was brilliant. Massive acceleration on the climbs.

from 0:15 you can see the craziest beginning on alpe d'huez ever in its history.the devil tricky beltran flying,hurting armstrong,chechu and dropping heras:eek:armstrong said afterwards that beltran's ride was supersonic and it was a misunderstanding,he went way too hard.but it's probably the ride that took ullrich's tour

Contador at Verbier 'cause I was there! Massively impressive ride bearing in mind all the behind the scenes shenanigans. Loved the way he caused so much damage on a relatively short climb.

& any of Robert Millars Pyrenees wins.

It was insane. Basically a 1km hill sprint on the most difficult part of Alpe d'Huez. You see the field literally exploding after 3 meters. Insane.

Weird thing is that in the end the group after Mayo was kinda big, even the likes of Laiseka and Mancebo were in it again.

Its also sad to watch, as this was Beloki's most inspirational ride of his career and he was ready to kick Armstrong of the throne (Ullrich became very dangerous later on, Beloki would've won the Tour), but 1 or 2 days after this ride his career was over...

You mean Sestriere right? That was a cool stage (but Riis was lucky that the peloton let Berzin do all the work).

Jean Francois Bernard - Ventoux ITT 1987 Tour is best ride.

Best attack - Tom Steels throwing a Bidon at somebody during a sprint in 1997 Tour.

A few thoughts from this year:

Contador in that late stage of the Giro where he looked like a god on earth (don't remember the mountain).

Van Summeren at Roubaix.

Andy's pull away at the Tour this year.

Gilbert's triple.

Good to see you aknowledge that the Gavia stage was hard and Liqui would have cracked Arroyo there too.

As to Aprica, why can't Basso attack Arroyo on 3%? We see people attacking on flats descents, uphills, but for some reason you think it won't work on 3%?

I saw Cancellara fly away from Boonen and Flecha on a total flat 1k from the end.

It would have been a group of 4, 2 of the riders Liqui. Arroyos just done the Mortirolo, I dont know if he can respond to 1 Basso attack.

Thank you. :) Its a bit ridiculous. Armstrong, attacking Ullrich, Sastre and Contador attacking everybody and next to them Garzelli and Nieve heroically attacking Bakelandts and the others... That stage stayed in my memory just like one of the hardest stages in the history but not like vivid or prominent one. :) IMO. :

They attacked Di Luca, Sella, and of course Hoogerland. Nobody attacks Hoogerland. And the other 2 arent shy to do some attacking themselves either.

Besides the thread says "ride" anyway, so they don't need to attack. And may I remind you that they held off Contador Scarponi Gadret. From the original group of 15 no other riders were able to do that.

Are you serious? Aerodynamic draft just kills almost any climbing skills on 3%. Liquigas had about 800 meters ramp to try to drop Arroyo. Only in 2006 Basso could do that. Naturally, but attacks that you mentioned are given by riders with one-day race capabilities mostly. It requires a range of skills to go away like that. Very limited Basso couldn't have done it. All he saved after suspension is steep climbs.

Cancellara is a very good sprinter plus he can explose on flat so monstrously that probably only Gilbert is able to compete with him in this little practice. We have only inflexible, stuck to the saddle Basso.

Yeah in a 140 man peloton flying up a mountain it does. But here there were 4 people in the group and Arroyo had already cracked once on the stage.

No no no, he isn't. He's not superslow, but if Cancellara is a very good sprinter than Tony Martin is a god in the mountains. He can accelerate very hard though on the flat. But not losing a meter to a sprinting Boonen was extreme :eek:

Like the Hitch said, at that part of the race Arroyo had already cracked a little, wouldn't have taken a lot to make him explode completely

No need to exaggerate. We're looking into some rider qualities, that let them attack. I'm writing "a very good" without trying to compare his to pure sprinters, just call his ability. Boonen has a better 100-150m. punch on finish line, however it doesnt help him to stick to Cancellara's wheel at all on the classics. Boonen won one of his Ronde van Vlaanderens with solo attack due to a very good induvidual riding, which is ≠ ITT. There's the same. Probably, the difference between these 2 guys in sprint has equalized for the last few years though. :p

Well Cancellara was 5th on Champs Elysees and 4th in worlds, I haven't seen Tony Martin getting such results on MTF's :D
