Every pedal stroke would be analyzed, and I guess that the meme about it. People would be overly ecstatic or overly depressed, even by very small things like losing a few seconds in February in Volta a Algarve. Think of Logic-Is-Your-Friend and multiply that with 20 of those people, and you have the Contador-thread on a daily basis between february-august.
Yeah, Nibali was nothing like that IMO. The only thread I can see having the potential is the Remco-thread because a) his a phenomenal talent, just like Contador b) he's heavily scrutinized and lots lots of people have very different opinions on him, just like Contador c) he has a small, extremely dedicated group of fans (Logic being the ringleader, just like LF back in the day, ALWAYS prepared to defend the icon), just like Contador (his was just a lot bigger - and Remco is still young).
That's an interesting analysis considering my stance generally is to urge people to refrain from the schizophrenic/bipolar behavior you're describing, at every triumph or failure. But taking things out of context is a funny way to kill the time, i understand.

Another super fanboy going farther back was ACF (Aussie Cycling Fan) whose support of Cadel got to meme levels. And there was this interesting dynaic between he and the Dutch mafia who dominated the forum in the early 2010s. Which is when I started lurking here.
Yeah they had some war of words against the other, especially after Evans won in 2011.

Some El Pisti memes:
Oh sorry, this isn't the clinic
Froome wins : I will barf
Nibali wins: I will barf harder
El Pisti will be missed more than Contador.

While we're both huge PhilGil fans, he hated Nibali whereas read my lips. El Pistolero was a character, hilarious and I miss him. He'd be able to explain the current state of cycling.
Get some shrimp on the barbie.

Was it you or him (or both) that had the amusing debate with Red Rick about how great or overrated PhilGil's 2011 season was? I think it was in a specific 'best season ever' discussion thread.

It was the emeritus forum member. It was clearly proven that Phil's 2011 season was the greatest ever. Some ppl never got over it.

Talking about members who basically became memes:

Anyone remember "Brigit", or whatever "her" name was?

No I don’t remember that user off the top of my head. What did they post about?

Basically, it started with a user who did a lot of trolling, and then got banned.
And then just sort of... invented a wife to, well, "speak his case". At least, nobody actually believed it was anything other than a - rather creative - sockpuppet.
In fact, I think there might at been multiple sockpuppets involved.

So, I went looking, and... here's the thread! Coz, yes! He actually created a thread...

Oh I remember Ray J all right but missed this thread. I remember when it was theorized Ray J was posting under a different sockpuppet.

Not a forum meme, but I'm gonna post this one here because it's rather fitting:

“PhilGil’s 2011 was overrated” will be announced at all of RedRick’s big events.
I unironically stand by that. If there is one hot take on CN I dont mind being associated with its that one.

Meanwhile I always thought Pisti liked Nibali. Or did he just hate him less than Froome and Valverde?

Weird since it's one of the worst ones.

He won five spring classics! Five!
Some dude on this forum recently said that not all one-day races are classics. And don’t conflate Strade 2011 prestige with Strade 2021 prestige.

One monument season.

You have to rate Amstel and Fleche and CSS and Strade too highly to make it a historical season for me

Yeah, we have heard it all before. It's nonsensical to me but there you go. I saw what I saw and he was extreme that season.

Okay, the word classic is of course not precise to refer to a 5-year-old race but it was still a bigger race (and sure, Gilbert's name on the list of winners added to the prestige) than other 1.1 races.

But usually, I would say that the set of spring classics consists of Omloop, KBK, Strade, MSR, E3, GW, DdV, De Ronde, PR, BP, Amstel, FW and LBL (sorry for going abbreviationally berserk). Maybe also the Frankfurt race of the changing names.

So many great seasons that are in the same order of magnitude as Gilberts 2011 but they dont get put up there as one of the greatest season of the century so far.

Gilberts 2011 season is like The Black album. Really good but really overrated.

But its always me who is nonsensical about this when nothing about what I say is factually incorrect

Pisti:
Phil's 2011 season was the greatest ever.
Gilbert was a more complete rider than Nibali.
Valverde's LBL wins don't count and his vuelta doesn't count.
Too many Froome beauties.
All we're left with now is misty eyed memories.
Nibali, Froome and Gilbert will probably retire at the end of this season and bring the curtain down on this eventful era. Valverde will never retire (there's at least another thousand top tens in him).

Contadors retirement really feels less of a change of era than like 2019 when all of Froome, Nibali, Quintana, Sagan and even Dumoulin stopped being relevant in a very short period of time.

Really quick turnover of top dogs in every specialty
