Sad to see him leave the Giro after his first win in a GT (and what a win). Hopefully no long lasting injury though.

Perhaps there are some storage issues with the spumante? Heat related maybe. Cork is not supposed to just pop out as soon as you remove the metal cover (don't know the english name).

Seems to be confirmed by La Gazetta. Such a shame, he probably would've won the Ciclamino.
Think eventually his recovery will be fine, there's no panic in the communication.
Probably heat causing the cork to pop that hard, yes.
And the word you're looking for is an agraf(f)e.

Yeah, I watched the video again, he didn't even do anything stupid like shake the bottle or so. I think someone should have jumped in and told him not to lean over the bottle like that.

Sad to hear he is abandoning the race but health comes first. And in my opinion yesterdays stage win should still leave him rather happy.

Likely heading to the Tour indeed.
It could be a blessing in disguise. He'll be a favorite to win a stage at the Tour for sure, and will be great to see him potentially mixing it up with Alaphilippe and Wout, as well as MvdP.

I wouldn't have too high expectations of Alaphilippe after his LBL crash but Ghirmay would be another good reason to watch the Tour for sure

Cheap tank secondary fermentation method of production, a champagne producer may say.

These days in Italy are very hot, with temperature near or above 30°, can be possible,
In italy we call the cover "gabbietta", that means "little cage"

A freak accident for sure but it really is his own fault.. you always remove the protection with the cork facing away from people because that thing can shoot out at any time. They should give a 10 seconds safety talk to all podium winners to remind them about it.

I have read this article https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/gi...um-ceremony-changes-after-girmay-cork-injury/ which is completely misleading and states that "He leant over the bottle and the cork came out at exactly the same time." which is not what happened at all, he was removing the protection and was staring straight down doing it..

Wishing for speedy recovery, he should do the tour!

Not sure if they will take him to the Tour: The team have him signed to a long term contract and they weren’t planning on taking him to the Tour a week ago for sensible development reasons.

That said, the publicity must be tempting and they did want him to finish a GT this year. The Vuelta would offer a lower pressure alternative, but of course nothing like the sponsor publicity benefit.

I'd like to see him get Tour and Vuelta stage wins before the end of 2023 and become the youngest rider to win stages in all 3 grand tours.
