Don't know if either of them are even riding the Tour or if they could be considered "break out" riders, but as it's a good route for the climbers, maybe Gadret or Anton.

Gadret I suspect will be feeling his ride from the giro, which in a lot of ways was his break out ride. I mean 4th in a very difficult giro, if that isn't breakout, what is?

And anton wont be riding the tour.
Plus he broke out a long time ago.

could have been phinney if he wasnt sick all season.

No way. Not ready.

Actually, what were you meaning by breakthrough? I had half a mind we were talking about GC guys since Hesjedal and Wiggins were mentioned.

If he hadn't been out for 3 months now I'd have said Rubén Plaza. Still tempted to say he might be one anyway since he was 12th last year and Movistar will be going in without a leader in the worst possible circumstances :(

Similarly, I might have thought about nominating Beñat Intxausti if he were to be riding but I think it's enough of an achievement for him to even enter a race at the moment since he's not going to be anything like 100% mentally for a long time.

Wout Poels is a good nomination, and I wonder about the change of scenery for Pierrick Fedrigo too.

Uran for me, even hoping for Wiggins massive fail just to see Uran showing his talent.

Agreed; it is really time for Uran to shine, seems like we've been waiting forever (seems absurd to say for a guy who is all of what, 24? but it feels that way).

Philippe Gilbert :)

With this seasons' bombenform, only Sky is the limit.
Ok, ok, he won't win le Tour, but he will take yellow jersey and than keep it for an impressively long time, after showing some awesome climbing. :D
Finishing 8th

for the GC Coppel who will finish about 7th

but more importantly Anthony Roux - this guy is the next Phillipe Gilbert - FACT will win a stage.
Phi himself if he gets yellow I can see him holding on to it for as long as he possibly can which could be along time otherwise he will drop off and work as a domestique.

If "break out rider" means a rider who wasn't really known before, but will be quite well known by the average cycling watcher after this years Tour, then I'd nominate a few guys already mentioned:

Intxausti, Uran, Coppel, Poels.

Inxausti will probably be mentally abesent (and who wouldn't?) but I've had really high expectations for him this year. Uran is one of my favorite riders and I'm sure he atleast will put in some very stable performances. Coppel? Well who really knows. He hasn't impressed me that much this year, but riding in his home country in the biggest race in the world will definitely help a lot and he certainly has some great potential. Poels has impressed me a lot this year, and if he really focuses on the Tour I think he could be the biggest surprise.

Intxausti,

I accidentally pressed the "Submit reply" while I was typing, so I didn't get to write what I wanted before you quoted me - but I completely agree (I've edited my post aswell).

It's really a shame (well, Tondo's accident obviously was much more tragic but I don't know how else to put it) that Intxausti had to witness the tragic event. It will most certainly affect him for a long time to come, and for that reason I don't think we'll see the Intxausti we could have. Hopefully he'll get over the shock at some point and continue his progess.

I echo Poels. Seems like the best bet to me. General public really doesn't have a clue who this is. And he has a good chance of doing an excellent performance.

Also wondering what this Busche-kid can do.

I don't think Uran will impress. Not sure why, but I feel like he'll never match the initial expectations I had of him when I first noticed him.

Thomas De Gendt will be great for some breakaway action. He really is an awesome rider.

Didn't Uran came fourth or fifth at LBL this year?

I think Artem Ovechkin will turn a few heads. His whole season has been build towards peeking in July.

Top-20 this year. Top-10 in 2012.

That's an interesting tip. I'll keep my eye out for him. Katusha will be bringing an all-Russian team full of class and talent but with no real contender for the overall. I hope they'll be in the break every day because their riders are nice to watch and they have many who are capable of winning a stage.

Yeah, but that wasn't very impressive. He didn't contend it at any time, same with everyone else in that group. His Lombardy podium back in the day was much more impressive and remains his highlight at the big classics.

You can't expect him to be at the same level of the Schlecks and Phil though.

But ok, I don't really know how he got that place as they never showed the chasing group.

That's the thing, we're talking about a guy who podiumed Lombardy at 21, so it's about time he's up there at the same level as the Schlecks. :(
