I think I took Friedman seriously maybe 20 years ago when I didn't know any better. Obviously his basic conclusions aren't wrong in. re. Britain; it's hard not to see that as the outcome. His flat earth, interconnected, benevolent and innovative knowledge based growth economy is a little more problematic. He seems to miss the part that the point of growth is profit and that many so-called past "solutions" and "innovations" were what bred the current problems.
