This sucks for Richie.. But he is hardly the first GC contender in history to experience bad luck...

Let's hope it will open things up a bit...

The way he couldn't follow his teammmates, I think sickness is more likely, he'll have a very tough day tomorrow

I wonder where he was positioned when having the mechanical...

Was he alone, or off the back?

I mean if he was at the front surely a teammate could have given him a bike before it was too late...

Something must have been out of order...?

Porte looked bad today. Maybe he is a little sick? Even Seb Henao dropped him when they tried to catch the peloton with the Blue Train.

Now Aru is the danger man. He could take the pink from Contador on stage 12. He can win a Cauberg/Mur-ish stage like that.

Only if at Astana there's somebody who actually has any idea of what to do.
If they put the hammer down on Crosara, leave 20 riders in the peloton and reel in the breakaway (that is essential), yes, Aru should get the win.
With a full peloton there are better uphill finishers than him for sure.

Uphill, I don't think Aru is much more explosive than Contador though.

I think he is a little more explosive. Not Murito-explosive, but more than people will give him credit for.

If they want to gain even more time on Uran and Porte, both Contador and Aru could do that.

he does seem a better uphill sprinter. Not much better (I don't think he could drop him), but better

I think he will be a bit better, couple of metres probably.

OTOH what Eshnar said, they have to ge rid of Phil,Ullisi,Matthews etc :)

I'm pretty sure they will get rid off at least one of them. Maybe all of them if they want some more time advantages for Fabio. Most likely Matthews. The final is too hard for him, I'd go for Gerrans instead. And PhilGil haven't been that impressive.

If Aru just take 3rd on the stage and Contador finish 4th, he will take the jersey due to the bonus seconds.

The difference between a one-day race were you are fresh and a week into the Giro with hard mountain stages is huge.

Neither Matthews or other riders like him will make it. I think Aru has a good chance of winning the stage if Astana want him too.

I guess today will change what some people would vote, but since I already thought Aru would get 2nd, it doesn't change my prediction (2'15"-2'59").

I also thought Richie would be second and he still might be, but I'd change my time prediction for sure now.

Aru opened up a gap of 2 seconds on a flat. I can easily see him taking another 2 on an uphill sprint, bonus or no bonus.

Yup. Aru should go for that stage. With a team like Astana, he can win it and will Contador would be forced to start in front of him in the TT.

Depends on how good he is going to be in the TT. Can he keep his lead against Lil' Richie?

He will beat Aru with 6 minutes (who will lose a lot in the TT) and Porte with 2-3 minutes (even though Aru is the better climber)..

An in-form Contador could win the TT

Do you think it will help him to know how much time Contador is putting into him?

Yes. It's better being the chaser than the prey.

If Contador he manages to catch Aru, I think the Giro is almost decided.

Hitch you of all people should know Contador is about 1000x more explosive uphill than on the flat.

For a good ITTer being last is best because you know what you have to do to best your rivals. But if he has to worry about getting caught from behind well it's better to be last on the road LOL!!

Betancur will win this after he gets on a 50-minutes breakway next week.

Not really. Contador's going to win. I expect with 1/2 minutes. No need to win with loads of time, seeing that he's going to ride le Tour.
