You would think he would want to ride the Worlds in Italy in September unless fatigue has finished him for the year.

Yeah I would be surprised if he didn't especially considering he's a former champ.

There is no way he won't be selected if he is still racing and does not end the year early because of fatigue or illness like last year. Evans and Gerrans will be the protected riders of course.

He should be selected for the World's but should ride as 1st lieutenant for Porte while Rogers is 2nd lieutenant and then you have a formidable team. :)

+ 1. Add Gerrant to this mix and keep ego out of the way and that formidable team can produce a winner or serve as king makers.

I think they will go with Gerrans and Evans because Porte can't sprint and apart from the Australian road titles he has never showed much in classic style racing. But he would be a great domestique for the other two but only if Evans can find some from after his Tour disappointment. Gerrans will probably be the number one. If Evans was in form the course is a great one for him but it's a big if at this stage. I think the two grand tours may have taken too much out of him this year. I hope not.

Gerrans has never and Evans not for 2 years shown the ability required to finish top5. Unless the others buy some ability somewhere then Porte in P-N/Tour form has a much better chance of winning (no matter how slim his own chances are). The debate is pointless anyway because unless you have a reasonable favourite there's no such thing as "working" for a teammate, you just pick a few guys to hide in the bunch and the one who drops last is your leader.

I suppose. I think it's a pretty open race this year, usually good form in the Vuelta helps. I would say at this stage that Gilbert won't win.

Evans could focus on the Giro over the Tour in 2014, as well as use the ardennes to build up to the Giro.
"That looks like a direction to head in. After all the years going for the Tour, [the idea of missing the Tour] takes a little while getting used to," Evans said. "But the Giro is always a race I wanted to do and do well in. It's just a matter of changing mindset and so on. So at this point, it looks like directing my energies towards a grand tour other than the Tour de France."

Would be a very good decision IMO, he has no chance of winning the Tour but as he demonstrated this year, he can do much better at the other GT's. And get results in them, while in the Tour he is just anonymous.

Harsh on Evans to say he's fallen off the wagon like Wiggins as their wins were certainly under different circumstances.
One is aging after toppling the likes of schleck(s), contador, etc... while the other just had a very suitable parcours and not much competition at the same time. Otherwise Mr Mod has been all over the place in TdF results...

Anyway, I think this decision to look at other GTs for Evans is long overdue - he should have more than 1 GT to his name by now. Hell, if Menchov can have more than Evans, something's wrong

AIS coaches once told me, once hitting the top of a sport most athletes have 8 years. Wiggins Olympic gold in 2004. That's the top count forward 8 years 2012 and what is wiggins saying? This is the life for younger men without famalies. Evans step back 8 years and that is where he first cracked the top 10 at the Tour. I don't think we've seen his form go up and down too much in that last 8 years. Froome hit his stride in 2011. He has some life left in him.

Agree can't compare Evans career with Sir Wiggo's. Evans with a rather long performance history in GT's etc.

But it will be good to see Evans planning the winter training in an attempt to do well in the Giro.

Bit late to worry about records now. His obssession with the Tour probably cost him some results elsewhere but the Tour win plus the Worlds were two things Menchov never did and he came close a few times. He has probably left it too late to win the Giro but he will give it his best as usual. 37 year olds rarely win grand tours. By doing the Giro it also leaves the Vuelta as a possibility if he recovers well from the earlier race.

Snow? He needs all the training he can get in those conditions considering his Giro performance.
