Cadel Evan's swipe at Valverde

From today's Australian newspaper.

FEISTY Australian cyclist Cadel Evans says his thoughts after a podium finish in the Tour of Spain are best summed up in a song by rock band the Foo Fighters called I'll Stick Around.

In a typically enigmatic move, the two-time Tour de France runner-up remained coy about his third placing on the three-week Vuelta, having finished behind the controversial Spanish winner Alejandro Valverde. "My conclusion of Vuelta can be found in I'll Stick Around by the Foo Fighters -- careful listening required!" Evans posted on Twitter, adding: "(Your guess who 'you' is)."

Whether that was a thinly veiled swipe at Valverde, who is banned from riding in Italy after a doping scandal he denies, is debatable. But the song does include the line: "I still refuse all the methods you've abused."

The result represents a return to form for Evans after a poor Tour de France as he prepares to ride for the Australian team in Sunday's road race at the world championships near his home in Switzerland.

Valverde took the Tour of Spain leader's golden jersey from Evans after the ninth stage. A puncture on the 13th stage cost the Australian time he could not reclaim and he finished 1min 32sec behind Valverde and 37sec behind second-placed Spaniard Samuel Sanchez.

Valverde captured one of cycling's three major tour titles for the first time just months after being embroiled in the doping controversy.

The 29-year-old Caisse d'Epargne rider virtually just had to stay in his saddle on Sunday to win the event.

Germany's Andre Greipel won Sunday's 21st and final stage in a sprint finish in Madrid ahead of Italy's Daniele Bennati at the end of the 110km course from Rivas Vaciamadrid to the capital.

Valverde finished the stage in 26th place, 10 seconds behind Greipel and with the same time as Sanchez.

"It's a special feeling, now I know that I can win a big three-week tour," Valverde said. "Everyone had doubts, but I knew that I could achieve it because I had been close."

The trophy will be some consolation this year for the Spaniard, who is under a two-year doping ban in Italy which prevented him from taking part in the Tour de France this year as it briefly passed through the country.

The anti-doping tribunal of the Italian Olympic Committee took the action last May after it said blood samples taken from him during an Italian stage of the 2008 Tour de France matched DNA samples from suspect blood bags discovered in the 2006 Operation Puerto doping scandal.

Valverde has contested the allegations.

I am delighted that someone has said something.

I was just reading thispiece on ValVerde victory on the main CN page.

I was wondering why other riders praise his victory - surely if there was a clean rider out there they would have to feel pee'd off when Vv wins.

cadel= champion...whiner!!!;)

Somewhere along the line I expected him to blurt out about the lack of sportsmanship shown when he flatted; costing him the Vuelta. He may not be talking about Valverde being a member of the Juice Generation. Either way; you're right. I'd probably be ****ed too, though.

for me it's, what changed from the start of the race to the finish? we all knew
about valverde. the uci said he can race. so now cadel brings that stuff up?
i saw every stage on universal and evan's rode ok throughout the race.
valverde deserved that win. he was the smartest guy in the race. too bad about
cadel's flat. that's racing. i really want to like the guy.

I listened to the song and i could barely understand the lyrics. i first thought that itwas referring to valverde for beating him in the dauphine twice and now the vuelta. But i understand it a bit more.

Lyrics to I'll Stick Around
Could you catch me if I were to fall
Could you keep your eye on the ball
Would you hear me if I didn't say a word
Would you believe in all you heard

Near or far, I will wait for you
I'm losing feeling, I'm losing you

If you love me, I'll stick around
If you love me, baby, I'll stick around.

Would you leave me, if I broke your heart
Would you send me right back to the start
Could you catch me, if I were to fall

And could you keep your eye on the ball

Near or far, I will wait for you
I'm losing feeling, I'm losing you

If you love me, I'll stick around
If you love me, baby, I'll stick around.
And if you need me, I'll stick around.
If you need me baby, I'll stick around.

All that I ever wanted was a symphony
for you and me
And oh let the music play on and on and on and on

If you love me, I'll stick around
If you love me, baby, I'll stick around
If you need me, I'll stick around
If you need me, baby, I'll stick around

(love don't come for free, love don't come for free)
(ITS NOT THAT EASY)

If you love me,I'll stick around
If you love me, baby, I'll stick around
If you need me, I'll stick around
If you need me, baby, I'll stick around

I can see why he would feel that way but the descision of valverde being allowed to start the vuelta is not valverde's fault even if he's a cheat. It's the uci's fault. It's seems very stupid that you are banned in 1 country and not another, Your either banned in all or none. Do we really want the same farce to happen with Pereiro/Landis? i think not.

I am so sick of these grown men twittering like 14 yr old girls. If you have something to say, have the cojones to say it. Hinting at it like a spurned teenager is pathetic. Harden up Cadel.

Wait... maybe he's just shy... maybe he was trying to say these lines:

All that I ever wanted was a symphony
for you and me
And oh let the music play on and on and on and on

If you love me, I'll stick around

if he goes out and says valverde is a doped up barstarda, then valverde could sue him for defamation of character. That's why very few riders would peak out about LA

Loser lyrics by Beck

In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey,
butane in my veins so I'm out to get the junkie
with the plastic eyeballs, spraypaint the vegetables,
dog food stalls with the beefcake pantyhose,
kill the headlights and put it in neutral,
stockcar flaming with a loser in the cruise control,
baby's in Reno with the vitamin D,
got a couple of couches, sleep on the love seat,
someone came sayin' I'm insane
to complain about
a shotgun wedding and a stain on my shirt,
don't believe everything that you breathe,
you get a parking violation and a maggot on your sleeve,
so shave your face with some mace in the dark,
saving all your food stamps for burning down the trailer park,

yo, cut it
Soy un perdedor, I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me,
double barrel buckshot,
Soy un perdedor, I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me,

forces of evil on a bozo nightmare,
ban all the music with a phony gas chamber
cause one's got a weasel and others got a flag,
one's on the pole, shove the other in the bag,
with the rerun shows and cocaine nose job,
the daytime crap of the folk singers slop,
he hung himself with a guitar string,
a slab of turkey neck and it's hangin' from a pigeon wing,
I can't write if ya' can't relate,
trade the cash for the beef for the body for the hate,
and my time is a piece of wax, fallen on a termite,
who's chokin' on the splinters

Soy un perdedor, I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me
get crazy with the cheez-wiz,
Soy un perdedor, I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me
drive, by, body pierce
yo bring it on down

That's funny. Wrong version... I don't think Cadel was hinting at a love song. :D

I thought I knew all it took to bother you
every word I said was true that you'll see

how could it be I'm the only one who sees your rehearsed insanity

I still refuse all the methods you've abused
it's all right if you're confused let me be

I've been around all the pawns
you've gagged and bound
they'll come back and knock you down and I'll be free

I've taken all and I've endured
one day it all will fade
I'm sure

I don't owe you anything

I had no other hand in your ever desperate plan
it returns and when it lands words are due

I should've known we were better off alone
I looked in and I was shown
you were too

I've taken all and I've endured
one day it all will fade
I'm sure

I don't owe you anything

I'll stick around and learn
From all that came from it

So Cadel can't protest at a known doper being allowed to race? Aren't you ashamed to use "the uci said he can race' defence? There's clearly much more to like about known dopers like Valverde.

as a licensed rider i am not ashamed of the uci.an imperfect organization to be sure. i like valverde and respect evans. i stand by my statement. if cadel was so put off by valverde, then don't race. he did the best he could. it was not good enough. just sayin'...

Wait for what? Wait for him to win the WC RR or help one of his teammates to do so? Maybe we can wait for him to get a year long vacation next season to savor his Vuelta win and come back even stronger in the Spring for 2011.

your right, he should not be racing, but it's going to take time with the uci to make a descision so we'll have to wait. he shouldn't of been allowed to start the vuelta but it is the spanish authorities we are talking about here and we know there dodgy. i really hope AV doesn't wins at the WC's because if he does get a world wide ban, his victories at the Vuelta and Worlds (hypothetically) will make the uci look like a bigger joke than it is already.

it is going to very interesting to hear the uci's explanation of valverde's case.
a lot of politics and murky jurisdiction issues. now that he has won a major grand tour, now what? this will be tricky for riders world wide. they may just punt. there may be no choice.

They have already punted the issue. That is why they are sitting on their hands while letting CAS handle everything. Meanwhile, McQuaid is vowing that Astana will not be allowed to renew their ProTour license if Vino is involved with management, even though Vino served his suspension, and this comes on the heels of giving a license to Armstrong's new team, even though Armstrong has been proved to have used EPO and his blood profile from this year's TdF indicates blood transfusions. Let's not mention the UCI telling a team not to hire Rasmussen, so he was kept from racing the Vuelta. Jeebus, maybe with The Chicken there, we might have seen a real fight for the GC.

SSDD at the UCI. All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.

At first I thought it was a dig at Valverde also, but then got to thinking.

There were claims the commissaires helped the Spanish team / hindered their opponents:
* cars between the break and the peloton when only at 10seconds, helping Alejandro + team get back
* Spanish rider close ups during the TT - potential for drafting benefit
* (ridiculous?) penalties for taking water and / or "pacing" back to the bunch
* allowing a bunch of riders to continue to race after missing the time cut - including half of Alejandro's team

The race support:
* Shimano neutral guy friggin with the wheel change (anyone got video link for that part of the race?) was this deliberate?

The UCI:
* what the hell is up with these guys? Sooo inconsistent with dopers and who is allowed to ride with which history and don't even get me started with the whole 3:1 fiasco. Letting Alejandro race - wtf - that's pretty much a slap in the face to CONI, surely? And Cadel could have some italian fealty as he is married to a gorgeous one ;-)

All these things fit (imo) to the premise that the race outcome was affected for him, so I would not jump to the conclusion it is Alejandro he is having a swipe at.

Them Foo Fighting words. Good on him for speaking out. The peloton needs more of these types rather than all the shepherd following muppets.

Yeah, what balls referencing some song lyrics on twitter.

It would be nice if he would have said "You know, I am clean and getting beat by dopers is starting to pis me off. They are taking glory and livelihood away from me and it's time to start talking about it publicly."

He can't say that, of course, for obvious reasons.

Speaking out?
Posting lyrics from someone else and saying: 'guess who i mean' is not speaking out. It's pathetic.
