Cancellara, ungraceful loser.

Page 2 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
He talks like Riccò did, though in a bit more subtle way.

He would do well, I think, to refrain though from the hyperbole when talking about himself and his colleagues. I'm a "Gladiator" and "fasten your seat-belts" would really be too much, if it weren't also comical. The thing that gets on the nerves a bit is that he's being serious.

He certainly road a strong race, but tactically was pretty stupid. I mean attacking with 50 kilometers to go, or something like that, was not the best tactic.

Lastly, when ya talk the sh!t like that, you must drop everybody and solo for the win. Come on Fabian, at least match the showmanship with unconditional bravura. Otherwise you merely come off like an a$$.

PS: Nuyens won. Next race.

I think it's amusing that so many people here are upset about Cancellara being a bit arrogant. I honestly think cycling could use some more non-doping-related heels who are hated only for being cocks and not for being cheaters. Too much blandness, and niceness in this sport. Bring on the anger.

this has become a thread battle between pro-spartacus and anti-spartacus. ultra fanboy vs envies. go ahead, smash your heads together.

if u can't accept nuyens's win & canc's loss, then go cry to your mama.

if u can't accept canc's ultimate strength and want to take every single opportunity to bash the rider, go ahead, be a sissy.

THIS is a pro bike race. rivalries, mind games, media manipulation, etc are to be expected, because there's a lot at stake here, like football. if u can't handle the unpredictability of a bike race, then go watch dart tournament.

It was strange. Very. Which is why I'm reserving judgement until I hear the words come out of his mouth myself.

The media loves nothing more than to grasp at some incendiary remarks, from anyone, and splash them about in bold print. A lot can be lost "in translation" either quite literally or when taken out of context.

If you watch the VN video, Fabian seems actually embarrassed when he uses the Superman reference saying, (just after the 6:00 mark) "As a favorite...as 'Superman' that had a weak point..." He actually comes off as humble, when you see the remark in context.

Until I see differently, I just don't believe that Fabian all of a sudden went "Cavendish" on us.

I'm not directing this at the OP in particular but...

Spartacus is simply an awesome rider who deserves respect, not condemnation based on one printed interview.

It is an 'interview' on CN and as we've seen with the Landis interview CN hacks are quite happy to make things up and to distort the words of the interviewee. So I think you have to watch the video alongside reading the interview.

That said it is pretty clear that FC fancies himself as the patron of the peloton - he was the one killing the stage to Spa. Although with the 'unbelievable' comments after E3 shows that perhaps the rest of the peloton doesn't see him as he sees himself.

The word of the day is 'Hubris'.

Indeed he made the race, but he attacked from too far, and thereby he rode a bad race if he wanted to win.

Its ok to be confident, and u even need to be a little arrogant. But as other ppl have said great champions are gracious loosers. its ok that he said he made the race, and that he was the strongest our there, but he shouldnt trash the winner.

Well there's nothing quite like having a bet each way is there?
We're not all fence sitters you know. Some of us actually have opinions about this. So if you object to people having opinions and expressing them, perhaps you should deliver your sermons to the deaf, they won't argue back.

"Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser."

Maybe he shouldn't belittle Nuyens, but he should be mad at not having won.

To start with a good loser is someone who doesnt trash the winner. But that doesnt mean he cant think that he himself was the strongest guy, and ofc he should be mad about not winning, but he only has himself to blame. A bad loser is someone making up a lot of excuses and trashing the winner.

I am assuming this is the trashing you are talking about?

“I’m very happy: there were fifty of them behind a gladiator,” Cancellara continued. “It was a spectacle and a double satisfaction: I lost by trying to win, the others rode only to make me lose. And in the end the one who was always in the wheels won. Congratulations to Nuyens, but for me [winning] like that has no value.”

If Cavendish or Wiggins made remarks like that certain members of this forum be would all over it like a rash.

You assume correctly.

Cool, I just wanted to make sure.

For my 2 cents, I read that comment, as he didn't like the way Nuyens went about winning. I don't think he was trying to trash or belittle Nuyens win.

I guess that depends who reads it. For me it it is definately a trashing comment. Imo he tries to take out the value of Nuyens win and also criticises who Nuyens is a rider. Imo something like "I was strongest out there today, but congratulations to Nuyens" would have been ok, but the comment he made was stretching it too far for my liking. But again we all look at such things differently.

Cancellara lost the race...
Nuyens won the race...

are you able to note the difference?

Clearly Cancellara doesn't think his translated words are acceptable............
..............unlike a few here that seem to think egotistical outbursts are perfectly OK if your action backs up your trash talk.

Best to blame an unspecified third party and move on.

Think its a little bit rich of Cancellara to demean the manner of Nuyens victory. Nuyens rode the perfect race and the manner of his victory was very admirable..
To be honest, I have lost a lot of respect for Cancellara after this strange interview and I hope that somebody can do the same to him in Paris-Roubaix..

nuyens is maybe a wors loser even than devolder. in thepast 4 years 2x devolder and once nuyens very much degrades this race.

Honestly? Devolder's wins both were very impressive. Yes Boonen jumped on everything that moved in 2008 but Nuyens and Flecha came very very close in the end.

devolder is a pathetic rider in every way. it's laughable that he won this race because he sucks pretty much eveyrwhere else and also in this race for the past 2 years. that's what I meant. also he rode strong but won because of boonen behind him. looking back in 5 or 10 years people are going to wonder devolder who the f*** was that??

There is so much fail in that comment that I dont even know where to begin. But I guess Devolder's biggest crime is that he isnt Columbian...

Hey if you want to worship someone who "absolutely buried himself to get back on", go right ahead, it's a free country.

Personally my admiration goes to the guys up front doing the work and the guys attacking and animating the race. And when they don't get rewarded for their efforts I'm disappointed. And there is no law against that is there?

Nuyens did a Bradbury. Good luck to him, he has the win but respect is another thing.

Don't know what a Bradbury is? Here you go.

some people seem to forget that the strongest doesn't always win.
