Carlos Betancur discussion thread

I really don't know what to make of Betancur's Giro. His fifteenth place was miles behind thirteenth and so a step below the best domestiques. Maybe he just stayed where he needed to be for the team, but the young Betancur was too dynamic not to be loosed for hunting one or two stages.

I think the move makes sense. He's stock is actually a bit high ATM. He's got pulled back a lot after Carapaz's stage win, and he's starting to look like he could be a good GT dom and a one-week leader. And Movistar is pretty set on that front. The question is if he can still hack it outside the Movistar envelope.

Last week he was devoted to Carapaz.

Interesting move. Truthfully think it would be good for Movistar as they can dump his contract and get another rider for the flats/TTs as they have more than enough climbers and some young climbers who have potential and potential to be very consistent dometiques as well. As for rather it's a good move or not for Betancur, well hopefully he's learned he needs to lay off the food and ride in shape.

I suspect this is a salary dump by MS - They need to strengthen their squad with more flat land grunt, so getting rid of Betancur makes perfect sense.

Now we also call Movistar MS? Not confusing at all.

That has been in use (as acronym for Movistar) for years here; applying it to Michelton-Scott was the new thing.
Movistar is a single word, doesn't have any sense the use of MS acronym to call it.

Betancur has been very professional for the last year. If he just continues like that, he could begin starting with the Vuelta to produce some great results, not seen since his spring of 2014 where he still looked (severely, almost, for a cyclist that is!) overweight! Just let that continue and Im sure he will do well on UAE if he chooses to go in that direction. At this point, Soler, Rosón and Carapaz are more obvious to get leader roles in races the tridente aren't racing and they are younger as well.

Also good points about getting a more well balanced team, that Ganna kid is super promising and would basically be the new Malori, yeah.

No Instagrampictures the last two months, was on the startlist for Poland but not included in the final squad, ... Betancur disappeared again? Let's hope not, at least he's on the provisional start list for the Deutschland Tour...

Have there been any sightings of this guy since May?

Nothing on his Twitter or Instagram since June 1st.

He keeps getting included on provisional startlists for races and then mysteriously disappearing from the official list, without any statement or explanation from Movistar. For example, procyclingstats has had him on Movistar's team for the Hamburg Cyclassics, but Movistar just announced the official roster and Betancur is not on it.

Back to his old habits it seems. This guy can't live like a pro for more than three or four months a year.

Well yeah, he is most likely leaving and tbh Im quite happy about that. If he just could string one year together... he has been unlucky tho, he was really climbing well in the Vuelta and the injuries transferred to the next season which put him behind and he could never quite catch up. Still, he is not worth betting on anymore for Movistar.

I would really like to know what would happen if this guy was going to sky
I doubt he'd be comfortable at an English speaking team.
He was Movistar 2nd best rider at the Giro finishing 15th in GC despite the huge loss of time on the Finestre stage after being in the early break. His problem is that having finished in the top 20 in the last two GTs he's completed he has shown himself as neither a potential leader nor a useful domestique. Movistar will probably do with him what they did with Pardilla.

An Italian PCT team wouldn't be too bad for him, Savio would probably give him a results based contract and he has already raced for an Italian team before.
In the end it wasn't a bad signing for Movistar, he got them a few decent results and if he didn't crash durning the last Vuelta he could have been even better.
I mean look at Diego Rosa at Sky, almost no results besides winning Coppi e Bartali and apparently they are paying +1M per season (overall 3.5M for 3 years).
