Carlton kirby - has to go !!

After witnessing the appallingly awful matt Keenan on the itv 4 vuelta coverage I will never criticise eurosport commentary ever again. Just thankful we have coverage ( still annoys me when they dump their coverage for pointless 1st round tennis) though

As usual Team Sky bloke resorts to playground name calling. I,d kick your **** up any hill mate !

What name did I call you? I did not call you a name, I merely suggested you needed a channel for your pent up agression.

A point you proved with your reply.

Seriously, your hatred of Harmon and kirkby is bordering on obsessive. What is equally obsessive is your refusal to answer questions that are put to you, instead resorting to defensive agression.

Yet Keenan is a million times (at least) better than P&P.

Yes I have contacted Eurosport and got no reply. On the Yahoo forums there are others who slate the commentating.

So why keep ranting???

Cycle Chic said:
I dont need to have any knowledge of commentary to know that Kirby knows nothing about professional cycling/racing (ex; Euro champs track).

So you know more? Have you sent your CV to them?

Minority Sport ?? not now it isnt.

Definitely not a majority sport either.

About time I did not end my crusade until we get decent commentators who are not on the Eurosport lifetime contract agreement.

you seem to be losing the crusade and to all appearance come across as, at best, a crank.

To other post - fair enough if they are low budget and cant afford to pay the likes of
http://www.cyclevox.com/commentary/

...but why do Kirby and Harmon hog the commentating ?? why not let the co-commentator talk more.

That is for eurosport to decide.

I was pleasantly surprised to see dave harmon cycling the olympic route with rob hayles and not being much outta puff. Unless highly edited (which doubt, as is cheap n cheerful eurosport), seems he competent on a push bike. Cant wait to see the peloton handle narrow box hill nine times!

Seriously, why is this thread still open? Blatant, blatant troll! I refuse to believe anybody cares this much about cycling commentary. Its been discussed from every possible point of view and Cycle Chics points have been comprehensively proved idiotic on numerous occasions. Further discussion is pointless.

I take that no one heard Kirby's comment about Sebastian Levy, yesterday, which went something like: "Look at that huge hunk of man meat."
I swear, he is taking the Micky, trying to take the smutty double entendre as far as the ES masters will let him.
Seriously though, the guy knows even less about track cycling than road...........which is an incredible achievement.

i agree that this thread long ago outlived it's usefulness.

I note Team Sky or Lib Seguros have nothing to say about this post. How about addressing this point ??

People are arguing against your idea that commentators should be ex-professionals, not that Carlton Kirby is a good commentator.

I didnt watch the track cycling so do not feel in a position to comment.

And besides, why should I answer you when you completely ignore questions that are put at you, like for instance, do you think that Ant McCrossan of the "Professional" commentator company cyclevox is a better commentator than Harmon or Kirkby

And im still awaiting the apology for you accusing me of name calling.

Has Kirby taken out that restraining order yet...?

I dont understand why this thread is still open, I understand that everyone has a right to an opinion, but this thread is about slating one particular person to the extent that cycle chic has attemped to create a following that want to try and get the guy fired.

I'm just not convinced that Cycle Chic's idea of Sean Kelly commentating for 5 hours is a sound one.

kelly solos would amount to loadsa silence punctuated with well...playing the waiting game...yes...sooo strong....i dont see it that way...the big favourites...right in the front of the bunch.... plus a few other constants.

and of course a handful of acute observations.

but yes, i actually tend to think it's okay to let harmon do his ramblings. for the comical effect, if nothing else. but granted, kirby laughing at his own jokes is a bit more of a curveball.

Anyone who is that bad at their job deserves to be fired. I don't see anything wrong in calling out Kirby for a **** job he does commentating.

I dont see a problem with calling people out, but this thread is 10 pages long mainly due to cyclechic. She has also harrassed Carlton endlessly on twitter telling him how terrible he is and how she wants him fired.

that is entirely different to calling someone out.

This comment assumes that this thread was ever useful. I don't agree that it ever was.

It's quite entertaining though and in our brave new world, Entertaining>>>>>>Useful.

Kindly find any post that I have advocated Sean Kelly commentating solo ?? And if he did it would be of more use than Carlton 'louder I shout they wont listen to what I have actually said' Kirby.

To TSF - I havent heard McCrossan commentating as he seems to be a presenter and doesnt commentate on Eurosport (I suspect because Harmon doesnt like him - as his comments during the Tour of Beijing showed)

Let me conclude - with Wikipedia's explanation of a commentator:-
"
Play-by-play announcers are the primary speakers, valued for their articulateness and ability to describe the events of an often fast-moving contest. Color commentators are valued for experience and insight into the game, and are often asked questions by the play-by-play announcer to give them a topic for analysis. The latter most often have gained their experience in the sport as a player and/or coach, while the former is more likely to be a professional broadcast journalist than a participant in the sport, although there are numerous exceptions to these general trends.
The most common format for a sports television broadcast is to have one of each type. An example is NBC Sunday Night Football, which is called by Cris Collinsworth, a former NFL receiver, (formerly by John Madden, a former head coach), and Al Michaels, a professional announcer. In the United Kingdom however there is a much less distinct division between play-by-play and color commentary, although two-man commentary teams usually feature an enthusiast with formal journalistic training but little or no competitive experience leading the commentary, and an expert former (or current) competitor following up with analysis or summary. There are however exceptions to this - all of the United Kingdom's major cricket and snooker commentators are former professionals in their sports, while the legendary Formula One racing commentator Murray Walker had no formal journalistic training and only limited racing experience of his own."

a) Neither Kirby nor Harmon have any journalistic qualifications.
b) They rarely ask the professional any questions - they prefer to talk themselves.

If Harmon gave the talktime to his professional co-commentator (color commentator) for half the time there would be a huge improvement.

AND - I just cannot believe that any cyclist who has the depth and knowledge of professional cycling (like Lib Seg and Team Sky Fan have) can support the idiotic commentary of Harmon and Kirby.

EVEN my mum asks what these bafoons are doing on television !!
