are they really worse than Mart 'OOOOH I LOVE YOU LANCE' Smeets?

Harmon really isn't that bad.

I almost always choose eurosport.
He is probably my favorite cycling commentator. He makes mistakes, but I like him. I like when him and magnus team up.

If you remember a few years ago, Eurosport had a lady called Crissy Anderson who was a really great asset to the Tour coverage.
I think that she was not liked by Harmon and she was replaced by a friend of Harmon-Emma Davies who was worse than Kirby.
and lets not discus Anthony McCrosen !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ah, old Crystal-Balls Christy Anderson and her predictions...

As for Harmon/Kirby etc, they are exceptionally arrogant when it comes to criticism and refuse to accept that any criticism of them, no matter how politely worded is ever valid. The fact that they are so unreceptive is why they get more virulent criticism.

That said, the same criticism can be laid at the door of most journalists, cyclists, members of the UCI, etc etc - if you aren't sucking up to them then you can **** off as far as they are concerned.

And besides, if you take a role in the public eye then you should expect to be criticised.

My God that would be worse ! Let the pictures tell the story. They don't have to talk all the time. Endless stats babble would be terrible even if the info was more accurate than usual. As for the cricket, even that goes too far. At least they don't have the seagull count anymore ........

Oh they still have that, and the regular bus updates. However, since the BBC don't cover cricket on the TV, you have to go to Radio 4 LW to get Blowers's wonderful insights now.

As for Kirby, I do think he could do with a bit more research and planning before he commentates, but I certainly don't think he is as offensive as some are making out and certainly wouldn't condone vitriolic abuse being directed at him - he's doing his best.

Personally I like Ducrot, kinda dislike Dijkstra. But Kirbys manlove for every anglophone rider is disturbing.

We have the awesome José De Cauwer, Renaat Schotte and the Fantastic combo of Wuyts and Steels. Wuyts and Vannieuwkerke are too biased together

The great Michel Wuyts. But he's Flemish from Belgium. ;)

Whenever I watch an anglophone stream online because there is no other way for me to watch a race I have to think of the HIMYM episode where Barney goes to get Robin from Canada and, looking at the "funny" Canadian dollars, says: "It's like you want us to make fun of you".

(Please note this episode also makes fun of the arrogance of some US-Americans, or, in this case, of elitist continental-european cycling fans)

We are not without flaw either over here, as heard today on German Eurosport:

Commentator 1: And there we see Sanchez. Not Samuel but the other ... oh, help me with the name ...
Commentator 2: Oh yes, what is it ... José Luis I think.
Commentator 1: Yes here we have José Luis Sanchez of Rabobank ...

My other pet hate is not knowing the riders names when its clealy obvious who they are and then subbing it with "the Saxo Bank rider". Or worse still is "the Rabobank riders attacks and the Saxo Bank rider followers and there's goes a rider from BMC" when the major action is unfolding.

What's your opinion on him? I can't recall his name but I thought that overall he did a good job when compared to Luis Piçarra. Sometimes you could see he had done some homework and brought some interesting topics to discussion, even though it clearly was out of his commentary environment.

Regarding the OP, one of the things I hate about internet is how it allows someone to get agressive for no reason. You can say **** you and then run for cover on the confort of your couch. I'm against bullying, but if you want to do it, don't hide behind a pc sreen. It's sad. Personal opinion.

you mean the portuguese guys who commentated P-N? well olivier is fun to listen to. he is no cycling expert but he doesn't make many mistakes, but most of all he is just fun so i like him. you could clearly see that gonçalo(i think thats his name) was trying hard and doing his homework doing research on riders and reading the route maps. he still lacks some experience but other then that i think he has some potential.

the first team with luis piçarra and paulo martins is very weird because even tho paulo martins is supposed to be the cycling specialist he is clueless about everything. he spent the entire F-W saying that purito was riding the tour and not the giro. i mean if you are a cycling specialist you should know that kind of stuff when that has been published in pretty much every single cycling related publication and not only that he is clearly a armstong fan boy and 2 days ago was putting him as the second best ever because he won 7 tours. the guy is just rubbish. luis piçarra is fun to listen does a good job and keeping the talk going for hours and hours and is a great cyling fan.

overall they are not great but mostly due to paulo martins.

Actually since this thread appeared, if anything I'm feeling more generous towards Kirby. Dude really shouldn't interrupt Brian Smith though. If you reach the limits of your knowledge, stop talking.

Same.

If he would just stop guessing at things he doesn't know he'd improve tenfold.

Anyone supporting Carlton Kirby on this forum must ride a tricycle like Duffield - you all clearly have no idea about cycling !!

You are on a forum where a majority of the people have probably forgotten more about cycling than you will ever know.

9/10. Didn't know the Champion of Champions nickname.

Oddly, I didn't know The Boss nickname either, but worked it out by elimination.
