well done mrs murphy - thats put the tricycle riding Kirby supporters right in their place :)

Don't be so patronizing and high and mighty... It's your good right to dislike Kirby but if other people like him it's their good right as well and you shouldn't be calling them stupids...

and who cares if you've seen damiano train, that doesn't make you an expert. It's a pretty cool experience for sure, but does that give you more knowledge about cycling than me/Dim/anyone else?

Well those other regions can vote with their wallets if they wish.

It wasn't my point that the British (or British expats) aren't the biggest audience, but that the delivery process is exactly the same whether you receive Eurosport in Britain on Sky or in Australia on Foxtel/Austar, or in Asia on their cable platforms.

Unless British Eurosport is a separate entity which does its own production and broadcasting independent of Eurosport.

Which it pretty much is. A large proportion of the commentary is done from the Eurosport offices in Bracknell and is targeted towards a British/irish audience.

Eurosport was launched/created by SKY in the UK in 1989. It's only very recently that the English language feed has been made available on ES International to places like Australia.

Some of the programming on International is different to that shown on British, but the vast majority of the English language commentary is taken directly from the British coverage.

If it's that bad - is there really no other alternative in Australia?? what have you done for the last 20 years?

Gives no indication that "British Eurosport" is not (currently) wholly owned by TF1.

TF1 (under the guise of British Eurosport) provides content and production to Sky to deliver it using its infrastructure and retail services.

TF1 (under the guise of Eurosport International or Asia-Pacific) provides content and production to Foxtel to deliver using its infrastructure and retail services.

The Eurosport channels in other markets are not some "inferior" version, whereby they are leeching off feeds from outside (i.e. what some broadcasters may do for other sporting events, like F1). This is what my original post on the matter was in reply to.

As for the last bit, outside of SBS no one has shown interest in cycling. For subscription TV, it would be far too difficult to setup an indigenous production of cycling and wintersports. Much easier to negotiate with Eurosport to provide content. If only they got around to doing that more than 2 years ago :( I'm not complaining about anything, just trying to clear things up. Coverage over there would be pretty poor without Eurosport too.

I like kirbys enthusiasm but do feel for him a bit because it seems he's been thrown into the sport. He does seem willing to learn , he does make me cringe occasionally. Case in point yesterday when he said soler certainly knows how to handle a descent so should gain time to being corrected immediately. He is very anglophone orientated but I think that's because he is trying to fulfil viewer desire or atleast what he thinks they want to hear about.

I live in France, so for cycling i watch on France 2/3, Eurosport France or Sport+. For France 2, I have to endure the crap of Thierry Adam. I don' know how Laurent Jalabert (who replaced Laurent Fignon) is doing to survive through each race. As for Eurosport, I think Jacky Durand is one of the most commentators. Of course, he knows what he's talking about, he's funny and entertaining and i think he's a very good commentator all in all.

Why not let Kirby do the talking?

Aww. You remind me of my daughter; when challenged she speaks very slowly and loudly, and punctuates each sentence with the word, 'ACTUALLY'.

She's 4.

You're not wrong, TF1 certainly have wholly owned Eurosport since 2001.

However;

In Europe, Eurosport is generally available on basic digital television service providers. Since 1999, Eurosport provides various opt-out services providing more relevant sporting content specific to language, advertising and commentary needs. Eurosport offers a stand alone channel which provides a standardized version of the channel (Eurosport Pan-European). Alongside this there are also local Europsort channels in France, United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Poland, Nordic region and Asia Pacific. These channels offer greater sporting content with local sporting events, while also utilizing the existing pan-European feed.

In Asia-Pacific territories, Eurosport offers a specific channel to this region. Eurosport (Asia-Pacific) launched on 15 November 2009. The service is available in Australia through Foxtel, Austar and Optus subscribers.

I think the issue you need to raise is with Eurosport Asia and ask them to provide there own commentators rather than using the British?

Obviously as Australians speak English (and this is just an unfortunate coincidence, I guess ;)), it is easier for Eurosport Asia to simply use the British Commentary. However, would you not expect the Polish commentary, for example, to be a little Polish biased?

At the end of the day, the channel is Eurosport. Britain and Ireland are in Europe - and are the only English speaking nations in Europe. By default therefore, the commentary is bound to be a little British Isles focused. As you point out, Eurosport was only made available to Asia in 2009, so I guess it takes time for production teams/commentators to adapt to this....

Australia wasn't in Europe last time I looked at an Atlas.

I by no means want to be argumentative, infact I deplore this whole thread and am reluctant to bump it again!

Kirby claiming that Cunego has done nothing since the Giro 2004.

Other than:

3 x Lombardia
Amstel Gold
2nd in the World Championships
2 Vuelta stages
2 top ten placings in the Giro

Damn these obscure Italians who never do anything for years.

It highlights his ignorance. I am pretty sure that if an anglophone rider had palmares like that we'd never hear the end of it. But because it is a filthy greasy italian rider his achievements don't count.

Erm, what are you doing in this thread if I may kindly ask? It is titled: "Carlton kirby - has to go !!", with two (2!) exclamation marks...

What on earth did you expect from this? Please choose your threads more wisely if you don't want to be bothered by other people's opinions.

Sincerely,
your friend boomcie

Friend and I, did a drinking game under Dauphine. We had to drink every time the commentators said either Sky or Wiggins. needless to say we didn't finish it, as we would have died from alcohol poisoning.

Anyway I don't mind the british cycling commentators, I'm just happy there's a stream with a launguage I understand as danish telly are too lazy to show anything but P-R and TDF.

Regarding the bias, it's what you will expect from the english... If it gets too much I usually just mute em and puts on some music.. and tbh. at least with Cav and to some degree Wiggins they have a case for it, compared to the usual England is gonna win the World cup in footy, Tim Henman is gonna win the Wimbledon, bla bla bla drivel.

I agree it can get a bit too much but on the whole it is not too bad and the analysts can and normally do keep it in check to an extent.

All in alll a small price to pay for me for the generally excellent/extensive coverage UK Eurosport provide these days.

To be honest, I'm happy to get my cycling fix whether it is in English/Flemish/Basque/Italian/French, och you get the picture:D

Oh and they have moved on, don't you know Andy Murray is going to win Wimbledon (he is an honorary Englishman for the week and a half before he gets knocked out:rolleyes:).

I wonder how many applications Eurosport would receive if they put an ad out for a commentator !! with a professional cycling background and knowledge....it would be blummin loads i,ll tell you - what about all those young guys riding for teams and having to work part-time ****ty jobs just to be able to race. I can name a few ! Malcolm Elliott will be hanging up his shoes soon - and you can bet he wont be asked - coz the likes of harmon and Kirby have it sewn up !!

I notice Carlton Kirby and Harmons cycling background is non-existent !! and never published.

Can you imagine the uproar if Kirby was to commentate on cricket, golf or rugby !! they wouldnt dare - but they think cycling is such a minority cack sport - they can put any old twerp up there. Its a disgrace ![/QUOTE
I think you will find that British Eurosports Rugby commentator is equally as incompetent and unqualified as Kirkby
