Another interview with Cav by Paul Kimmage, quite different from a lot of the other interviews done on him lately.

What's this? An interview that DOESN'T focus purely on him mouthing off, and actually paints a picture of him as a troubled young man who had a difficult childhood? Clearly this is just hero-worshipping bias from the English press.

Oh wait, the English press doesn't give a crap about Cav because it knows nothing about cycling. Could it be that Cav is actually... a complex human being with depth to his character? Never.

Why does the point stand though? English paper yes fair enough...but it's an Irish, former cyclist with years of experience dealing with cycling both as a competitor and journalist. So, please explain how your point stands.

"His parents announce that they have booked tickets for Paris — the first time in his professional career that they will travel to see him race. Cavendish is not happy. “Why Paris?” he wonders. “Why now? Why haven’t they come to support me in the mountains when I’m suffering?” But mostly he resents the distraction. He wins the 19th stage to Aubenas and captures his sixth stage of the race with a breathtaking victory on the Champs Elysees.

The race has ended. He is making his way to the podium surrounded by journalists and officials when a member of his team announces that his mother is here. He’s figured it out. He has also decided that he doesn’t want to see her. He returns to the team hotel and prepares to hit the tiles with his teammates, the people who were with him in the mountains. They celebrate long into the night. At 7am he returns to his room to find a note under the door from his father: “Hi, Mark, just wanted to see you.” But this is not a time for regret. He packs a suitcase for Germany and a week of tiring engagements."

So Cav's parents travel to Paris to see him at the Tour, and he refuses to see them. This takes douchebaggery to a whole new level. Unbelievable.

Did you read the rest of that article at all? The guy clearly has a lot of unhappy memories associated with his childhood and his parents. If you want to ignore the vast and complex spectrum of human emotion and boil it down to LOL WHUT A DOUCHE then go ahead.

What an ****! They may not of been their for him every step of the way but I bet they made big investements in his cycling. That really ****es me off about sportsman on how selfish they can be when they get paid very well for competing in sport. Maybe they need to do a hard days work in the "real world"!

The whole message behind that segment of the interview is cav saying he realises how much of a tit he has been to his parents. its the state cav saw bellis's parents in, and various things that have happened to him, that makes him realise this. the whole sunday times interview is a very interesting read. theres a bit where cav is crying in the interview (according to kimmage)

also, anyone see on twitter scott sunderland retweeting an article with cav in the daily telepgraph earlier this eve? with the content of that article, and a bit of reading between the lines, i think its obvious cav is off to sky

Hardly a redeeming interview. I've no doubt Cavendish is a complex, angry young man for whatever reason. But he really does need to grow up fast and realise that he is not the light, not everything and everyone is against him and show some respect. And just because you are on a downer it doesn't justify spouting off off like, erm, like a douchebag!

Oh and the fact that he is English (if he does consider himself so, coming from Man) is irrelevant I'm guessing as a factor on what people base an opinion on him.

Now his team are trying to get him to sign a **** new contract when he is worth double what they are offering. He'l happily coast along this season and join a new team and win again all next year. None of you are worthy to even do his shoe straps up, he's the worlds best sprinter and is a normal fallible bloke. It's funny seeing just how wound up some of you get though. He gives a normal interview, doesn't hide behind a team press officer and sometimes says the wrong thing. Fair play to him.

I thought I'd given up on this topic, but this really needs responding to.

You really can be naive at times. Why would you bet his parents made big investments in cycling? Do you know his family and his childhood circumstances well then? You obviously don't have a clue what some families can be like, probably sat in your cosy little bedroom cuddling your My Little Pony with two loving parents... it's not the same for everyone, you know. Many people get treated like **** by their parents. Many parents who have previously treated their kids like *** then try to become best mates with their children when the kids become rich and famous. The clue might be in Cav's statements that "he's always had people telling him he was ****, not good enough". That may not necessarily be about coaches.

I don't know Cav's circumstances, but to "bet that they made big investments in his cycling" is a pretty big assumption, and to slaughter him for not seeing them when you don't have a clue of his circumstances is just unacceptable. And as for him needing a hard day's work in the "real world", with a brother being done for drugs also suggesting all is not well within the Cav household, I'm guessing he knows more about the "real world" than you ever will. But hey, if you want to get off on your hatred of Cav without considering other possible circumstances, then go ahead.
