Why would there have been black ice? As far as I can tell from Spanish weather agency data it didn't freeze at the elevation they were riding at at any point in the 24 hours leading up to the race and I can't find any statements to the contrary.

I can, however, find a statement by the race organisers, who are not happy. Loose translation: they had zero input in the decision to stop the race, disagree with the decision, see this as a lack of respect from the riders and doubt this would have happened if this was the Tour or Vuelta.
CN's latest article doesn't mention black ice either, just some heavy rain and slippery roads. https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/ch...llenca-cancelled-due-to-dangerous-conditions/

Your article mentions some riders may have been injured when they crashed, any idea who they are? (Article says: The organization regrets the injuries suffered by some of the cyclists who have been involved in a fall and wishes them all a speedy recovery.)

Oddly, I have not seen a single update on who was involved.

"The big teams" is what I've heard. So definitely UAE, probably also Red Bull, maybe Movistar acting like they run the race.

That being said. Mallorca + rain and cold is troublesome. Twisty and super slippery roads. Apparently riders were crashing left and right with a few going over the ledge of the roads, which would be super dangerous later in the race cause in some of the descents if you go over you're just dead.

Rob Hatch in commentary mentioned that some roads will be resurfaced in the next two months, so probably not an ideal combination on the day.

Ultra-rare 2025 sighting of Vuelta podium and Angliru winner Hugh Carthy!

I've checked the startlist and Marijn isn't even here so not sure who he's helping, Albanese?

Incredible win for Leitão with an attack some 500 meters from the finish.
