I've always thought him to be highly suspect. I don't think his wins will stand the test of time, personally.

And while he didn't cheat....

Speculation. No way you can know this–evidence suggests it's quite possible that he did. All you can say factually is that he didn't get caught for cheating. You don't know he didn't cheat.

His team doctor could well have gotten the TUE for no legitimate medical reason, it has happened innumerable times in the past and will continue to be a method of cheating. All you know is that WADA and the UCI are not going to do anything because the "process" was followed correctly...or not...depending on which WADA or UCI announcement you want to listen to. WADA have issues with it and the UCI are changing (or claiming to) the process because of the clear ease with which one doctor and one UCI doctor can subvert the system.

All worth noting since we're always very concerned with facts being correct and are so worried about the speculation often bandied about in this place.

Love the fact you tell me I'm speculating, and then immediately speculate yourself.

Back on topic...

He has pledged to bring the UCI into line with WADA guidelines and set up a TUE committee in time for the TDF 2014

Seabiscuit?

I'm going to give you more credit for that post than I suspect you deserve

A small horse, Seabiscuit had an inauspicious start to his racing career, but became an unlikely champion and a symbol of hope to many Americans during the Great Depression.

UCI have finally acted on what the people want - clear rain jackets now compulsory.

There's always been doping in cycling, Bennyboy, and there always will be.

Meanwhile, in other news, life goes on and sensible decisions are made....

So we shouldn't try to do anything about it then?

No, that isn't what I am saying at all. But just standing at the sidelines making sarcastic lame quips when an announcement is made that isn't directly related to doping is just plain dim.

Doping is the most intractable issue. Always will be. But that doesn't mean there aren't a whole plethora of other issues that contribute to the sport as a whole.

You know, life goes on...

Clear rain jackets, WTF, they're rain jackets not rain ponchos. Let's make those hideous POC helmets and glasses compulsory too.

Calling doping an intractable issue, suggests that the UCI has tried hundreds of things to remove the curse of doping from the sport, & failed.

That is plainly false.

The UCI has done the square root of F*** All to root doping out of the sport, & Cookson is continuing this policy. Instead he is focusing on pointless & idiotic changes, in the hope that we'll all forget his promises to change the sport, & be a new broom as the head of the UCI.

Me, I'm still waiting for him to hand over control of doping to WADA; how long is it since he promised us that he'd pass doping control over to an Independent body ???

Hope so. There are lots of horses in the french countryside and it would not be safe the have half empty bottles of horse steroids laying around.

You probably aren't aware, there is background to Cookson's statement about litter:

"3. 584 people complained about a comment piece article in The Times by Matthew Parris, published on 27 December 2007, headlined “What’s smug and deserves to be decapitated?”. The complainants were mostly cycling enthusiasts objecting to the suggestion that piano wire be strung across country lanes to decapitate cyclists, as a punishment for littering the countryside. The Commission said that the Code of Practice had not been breached, although it was pleased that Mr Parris had apologised for his comments."

Matthew Parris was a Conservative MP, and is a newspaper columnist, he's regularly on TV and radio. You can probably find his original article online somewhere, but he did accuse cyclists of leaving litter in the countryside, energy drink bottles etc, and he did suggest stringing piano wire across country lanes to decapitate cyclists, all of this was in The Times. It would not surprise me if Cookson was responding to negative press reports about the Tour coming to Britain.

Genuine question.

Has there been anything revealed about Cookson either in his career to date or personal life which suggest that he will be corrupt/ corruptible as UCI president?

The fact that he was part of the UCI for several years under McQuaid and happy to go along with chasing down Kimmidge and Landis (amongst everything else)?

That's a genuine answer

Yes, there are many examples of conflicts of interest.

- his son works with the most prolific team in cycling
- his releases and updates on the independent commission show that it is not truly independent
- firing many of the old guard but failing to release Zorzoli. Then, circumventing WADA guidelines and dissolving the TUE panel, giving sole responsibility to Zorzoli

And don't forget that his very election was a break from procedure and protocol

Edit: I am forgetting details, but isn't the Kimmage lawsuit still in play? Something that it was postponed but not withdrawn by the uci? I think I am misrembering

In theory the UCI could do more, but there is the vexed question of who pays for it.

In the meantime other decisions have to be made about other things in cycling that are not related to anti-doping but are about the smooth running of the sport of about its promotion. That is the job of the UCI.

I'm fully aware that there are some people who spend much of their waking lives on this forum banging on and on about whatever their particular obsession is, whilst not actually being a part of the sport or contributing to it or anti-doping in any way beyond lazily sliding their finger across a 3" screen, but actually...

...life goes on. :)
