Christophe Bassons - suspended?!

I saw this on Inner Ring (http://twitter.com/inrng)

"Christophe Bassons, was riding the French MTB Marathon Champs and abandoned, then drove home. He was picked for a post-race control and didn't know."

http://www.lequipe.fr/Cyclisme-sur-route/Actualites/Christophe-bassons-suspendu-un-an/320914

Google translate:

This happened during the Championnat de France bike marathon, which took place on September 1st at Langon (Ille-et-Vilaine). "I gave up running twenty kilometers from the finish, says former professional cyclist, whistleblower doping. When I stopped, a person in the organization has asked my name down my bib number and immediately informed the PC of the race. I recognize the error of not having waited until the end of the race to see if my name appeared on the list of riders to control. I took the road to Bordeaux (where he lives), and it is only two and a half hours after my desertion that I received a call from the timekeeper of the race saying that I had to be checked. It was too late to return to the place of trial. Why do I have does not tell you much earlier? Why so heavy a penalty? I do not understand. "-

So is the system going to start retaliating against those that helped expose it? Will be very interesting to see things like this happening to those who spoke to USADA next season. It is going to be ugly.

Someone at the organization (usually you need to leave a phone number to enter) and anti-dopage have something to explain.

I've had similar cases where I abandoned, risks getting ill by making it to the finish, and having to ask several official before I'd get to see the list of those picked to be tested. I was quite hard to get confirmation, or even cooperation from anyone to find out whether or not I should be tested. It's very easy to get a ban like this. Especially if someone keeps it silent. Or picks you "at random" after you abandoned. Scrutiny is required to rule out foul play here.

Lance called the UCI on him.

UCI ADR:

Rule broken:
184. A Rider who has abandoned theRace must attend within 30 (thirty) minutes of the finishing time of the last classifiedRider.

Interesting selection process:
Selection of Ridersto be tested
175. The UCI may designate the Ridersto be tested in a particular Event and instruct the Doping Control Officer accordingly. Failing such instructions, the Doping Control Officer shall test the Riders as desig-nated in Appendix 3.

I know from experience it can be hard to make it to the finish line in time in marathons. Especially once you've abandoned for reasons of exhaustion or mechanical. I never raced with a cell phone on me, and no-one is expected to.

Bassons made the error to not ride to the finish by car. But even that may not always be possible from the place where you parked. If you parked away from the crowded area's, at times you may abandon close to you car, and getting to the finish line is impossible, especially so shortly after the races end. Races can cross the roads needed to get there. If there are even roads that connect you directly to the finish.

So dope for years, keep the winnings and get a 6 months suspension or miss a test after you abandon and get a year. Sure he made a mistake and it makes sense to be penalised for it but that seems way out of proportion.

The UCI has gone full ***. This stuff only makes it apparent how desperate they are to keep the Omerta going.

What was that Verdruggen quote about how he can arrange for any rider to test positive?

Given the current state of affairs, it would be very interesting to see if the UCI had requested this test for Bassons. Very interesting indeed.

does anyone really care about this non-news?

Why did you post that when after reading a few posts it is clear that some do ? If you want to make a point why not just come out and say it rather than posting something you already know the answer to by just reading !!!

It is the timing of it that seems coincidental and a hefty ban for something with a logical reason when compared to guys caught outright, I would love to know more about the details of the test etc who performed it, who was running it, how did he get picked etc because something does not seem legit especially when you consider the timing and circumstances surrounding it.

If you have no interest then feel free not to involve yourself in the conversation.

One thing though: It's not the UCI.

Christophe Bassons has been handed a one-year suspension by the French Cycling Federation.

If I were him, I would think about not racing until this blows over.

Isn't kind of unusual to test someone that abandons?

I bet there has been some collusion between the UCI and the AFLD. The stuff went on way to long with Lance.

First of, you don't read, the AFLD didn't suspend Bassons, the French Cyling Union did. Besides, it's blatantly ridiculous considering AFLD and UCI(Lance) are mudslinging each other.

Let's await the appeal.

Bassons was a random selection. The testers are just drawing out of the start list. And it will blow over in about one year.

Telling response by the crowd on this forum. If Wiggins had quit a race and skipped where he was the random control you would have been screaming "Conspiracy! Proof of Doping!"

Since it was Bassons, you are screaming "Armstrong! UCI! Proof of Conspiracy!"

Just pointing out the obvious.
