Not surprised to see Pantani leadthe protests. He was more then happy to enforce the wrath of omerta onto Andrea Tafi during that year's Giro.

I may be quite wrong about this, but wasn't Tafi yelled at 'till he cried only the next year? And if I remember correctly, Pantani wasn't involved other than co-leading the protest at the 99 Giro with 3 other riders.

That was "that" Giro where Pantani ended up ejected for high HcT and the Mapei team boasted they were "the only team in the race with normal blood values". "If my riders' HcT stayed the same after the second week like all the other teams here I'd fire them on the spot" said their DS. And it was clear they were clean.....it was a squad of superstars and they did exactly NOTHING AT ALL during that Giro, and not for lack of trying :p

I don't think Pantani he led the protest at the 98 Tour, though.

Jesus Christ we're off-topic :D

I'll shut up now

It was in the 1998 Giro that it happened. If you have a copy of Pantani's biography (The Death of Marco Pantani, it is all there in the chapter of the 1998 Giro).

Now correct me if I am wrong though, but I believe van Est made a lot of money after his accident as a watch company ended up sponsoring him and used that photo of his crash.

The tagline was: "I fell 70 meters. My heart stood still, but my watch kept on ticking."

I doubt that he got a lot of money though. This was long before huge sponsor contracts. Riders had to work hard just to earn a living and income from ad campaigns just made it a little easier. This is the bike he fell with:

I'm assuming Lefevere left Mapei before that :p Was it 1997?

Great pic. I really like the way they did that. Sad part is, this photo makes me realize how old I really am. I coached one of the kids on the Ritte squad in Little League baseball!

Bettini through gritted teeth

I miss the cricket. I like the gold and rainbow stripe accents to his shoes, helmet, and kit (not quite as outrageous as Cipo, but certainly makes a statement). It's also nice to see him beating McEwen. Thanks for posting the photo.

Great thread

Tried to find that brill one of Kelly in the (dark) of the Nissan Classic 1991. All that caught my eye was this:

A darker moment in cycling (the doping protest):

Fondriest

Beaky old Fondriest was, in my opinion, particularly photogenic:

And while looking for Fondriest, this shocker:

Ladies and gentleman, that is Gianni Bugno pictured last year with Fondriest. He's a helicopter rescue pilot these days, folks!
