No most people in the UK don't. There has been a substantial uptick in people sailing the high seas with non legal firesticks and the like.

I was afraid of that, anyway hopefully we can improve that in the future and to make pro peloton more accessible again in the UK, especially in regards to Tour de France.

It seems that HBO Max made some sort of deal with Sky and hence it might have access to 10 million households from the get go. Furthermore it seems that Netflix might buy the whole division from WBD in the future and hence that would cover a whole lot of households. Hopefully for cycling to be a part of it then and to be more accessible, hopefully lower price barrier.

We will know more after the next round of consolidations on the market finishes.

So if i understand correctly HBO Max currently has 0 subscribers in the UK and not only will you need to select in between 4 tiers of HBO Max you will on top of that need to pay TNT Sports streaming subscription extra? So around £35 per month minimum or no cycling? Eurosport subscription meanwhile was £7?

How much do you reckon would cycling coverage cost you on Sky Sports and i assume a lot of households are already paying some subscription for Sky Sports?

the TNT sports thing isnt really changing that much, its just HBO Max are going to "host" the streaming side instead of Discovery +. It will just mean you have to use another different app/website to watch it, maybe this one will be better app.

the rest of the HBO Max thing is just an entertainment content thing, and for years HBO have had a deal with Sky that their shows like Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon/Sopranos/Last of us etc etc were part of the Sky entertainment subs on their Sky Atlantic channel.

but HBO probably dont make as much money as theyd like from the setup, and theyre making this new Harry Potter series, which they knew they can totally cash in on, so Sky and HBO were at loggerheads for a while sorting out some kind of deal and this is the culmination of it, not sure what happens to Sky Atlantic yet, but Sky are bringing back Sky One as their main entertainment show channel.

and fwiw Sky subscribers (even those on the basic Essentials package) will get HBOs standard ad supported tier,at no additional cost, to begin with, whilst noting Sky price rises alwayas happen in April, so quoting prices now is probably a mistake. how that works for customers still with satellite, and not the streaming boxes, who knows as it doesnt sound like HBO are bagging a space on the EPG, but maybe they are.

as for Sky sports, unsurprisingly there ppm cost is very similar to TNT, ranging from 20 to 35 quid, like they charge 20 per month to watch F1.

cycling as I keep reminding people doesnt pull in vast audience numbers to the point its worth Sky bidding for rights for things, as theyd rather bid for rights for things the majority of their viewers want to watch, which is not cycling, Sky are football, darts, cricket,NFL, F1, rugby, golf, boxing probably in that order, with a bunch of kind of other sports to fill in the gaps.

I still think if WBD are going to be outbid for cycling content, it will come down to the likes of DAZN who are trying to break into the UK market and disrupt Sky/TNT, or Amazon who have kind of had a toe in the water with some premier league football rights, but dont appear to be looking to continue as a sports subscription content provider.

Yeah i guess the main problem is all this options tend to have minuscule market shares and all are behind steeply priced pay walls. That i guess can't really satisfy demands for a race such as Tour de France, regarding the general availability.

As for massive unofficial streaming access, here unfortunately i didn't find any data, on how popular cycling is in UK. Generally speaking i could imagine most people would be prepare to watch it if local champion would be winning Tour de France.

I didnt capture the audience figures for the whole race, and you have to pay to access them now.

but ITVs live coverage of the opening stage of the TdF last year, free remember too, got 158,000 viewers. the highlights, admittedly badly time shifted due to the darts that day, got 50,000 viewers.

the 2nd stage got 126,000 viewers, the highlights at the normal time 119,000.

and from memory thats about as good as it got, I think the final stage drew more in because...reasons I guess

but you're looking at about 150,000, for free coverage, and TNT probably get figures of about 50,000 tops

for comparison, the Darts Masters final live the other week got 540,000, same ITV channel. and it gets into the millions for live football.

thats the size of the audience in the UK, for cycling, its basically the size of the British Cycling/CyclingUK membership and thats it

I pay through EE, it’s 20 a month but strangely fiddly to subscribe to as the buttons take you round in a circle on the online browser. I got there through the EE app, not sure if it will be affected in the end.

As an added bonus I will be able to watch United get beat tonight without resorting to a 360p Iraq Goals stream. I will miss Hafid Derradji, and Faris Awadh giving it socks in the Arabic feed, maybe HBO max will hire them for the cycling.

Just wondering do you get Šeško scoring plus cycling in the same package or are this two separate packages in UK?

I see. Well, currently massive consolidation is ongoing on the market and who knows maybe cycling in the UK will indeed land on a platform such as Netflix in the future. Maybe even BBC to cover Tour de France. Then if some local talents start making inroads and due to presence of a team such as Ineos, all in all am rather sure that darting and cricket won't stand a real chance.

I don't understand the language but the commentators of Tour of Oman did a pretty good job. They never stop talking (I wonder about what) but actually point out when key riders are out of position. Like today they reacted to VPP getting dropped - so they clearly have some knowledge. Always nice to watch the race live on youtube. Cycling to the people!

I assume it depends on your sub, I currently pay £3 additional for Disco extra garbage and my email states no change to current arrangements other than logging into TNT. Wait and see I guess.

So UAE and Andalucia were on TNT channels today, but an advert free version of the coverage of both was available on the Disco+ app; Algarve was not on TV, and the D+ coverage did have adverts. I think I had come across the same last week: something I watched was TNT Sports (with no following number) at top right of the screen, but did have adverts.

So is this the new normal: no ads on the app if it is on the TV, ads if it is app only?

EDIT: except I now read in the race thread that Algarve was being broadcast (except the last 2 km), so scrub that theory.

Sounds like a sensible idea - TV rights might cause a problem or two, but "money talks".
The Premier league will earn 6.7billion pounds for the domestic rights, alone, from 2025 to 2029 seasons

Thats a heck of a lot of £10 subs they need to sell to be in profit.

Because Sky whose literal entire business model relies on Premiership tv subs will not be spending billions buying rights to games the Premiership is dropping for 10quid a month

Its an interesting idea, but the Premiership largesse is funded by the billions in tv rights. Where's the evidence there are 15million people per year want to subscribe to their service ?

Sky sports are estimated to have around 6million subscribers based on published viewing figures.

So the Premier league are saying there's 2.5-3 times untapped potential out there that Sky cant reach...not convinced 🤔
