That is bad reporting from the Guardian. WBD are rebranding BT Sport as TNT in July but "Discovery’s Eurosport in the UK and Ireland 'will continue to be available in the same way as it is today before being rolled into the new brand at some time in the future' after talks with its distribution partners. "
That "some point in the future" appears to be post the 2024 Olympics and pre the 2026 Winter Olympics.
So around the time that WBD's HBO deal with Sky is supposed to run out allowing them to create a larger, premium sport and entertainment streaming platform.
But they currently have plans to keep Discovery+'s sports and conspiracy theories and freakshow content available as a cheap and cheerful subscription offering. Also, there currently doesn't appear to be any plans to kill off GCN.
I think the UK change may happen quicker than that, simply because the whole point of this deal in the first place was to consolidate the two sides Discovery/BT Sport together in one place and under a new one brand and thats on the technical/studio sides maybe even commentators as well I think, the reason they didnt just rename everything Eurosport or BT Sport is apparently they wanted a brand that had wider global recognition. And whilst the BT Sport channels rebrand is happening in July because it needs to be inplace before the next premier league football season kicks off, they have said Eurosport UK & Ireland, will become part of the brand soon.
ok soon is as long as a piece of strong, and theres probably a bundle of things they need to unpick first, like Eurosport is currently offered as part of Skys channels deals, ie the distribution partner, in what they now call Sky signature, but is just the core channels pack.
So theres bound to be some negotiating and running out of existing deals, around what does that mean in the future if everything is suddenly TNT sport, what does that mean for Sky, will Sky carry on getting 2 TNT channels or will it become the bolt on package like BT sport currently is ? what does it mean for BT as its a joint venture so theyre just as interested in pushing subscription packages that use their broadband or mobile products.
and what does it mean for GCN, as the Discover+ app is going to be the consolidated app for streaming. and I kind of stress again the point of the deal is consolidation, having multiple brands as channels or apps offering different ways to access effectively the same content is not only confusing for customers, but dilutes the effort they put into the new brand in the first place.
