If Alberto is already in negotiations with various teams for next season, would it make sense for those teams to start helping Alberto in this year's Tour?

A very speculative article. Contador is more inclined to sign a 3 or 4 year contract, with a ProTour Spanish team. Clearly focused on him, which may be too much a demand for the current team structure of TeamCassie. I suspect they will continue their strong support for Valverde post 2011. Sanchez also is a key rider on the team, limiting ($$$) resources for the focal points/key-riders.
Also I read Cassie sponsors may leave the ProTour 2011.

To my knowledge, Cassie will end their Sponsorship at the end of this season "at Professional Level", but remain linked to cycling as a sponsor of the French track team for the upcoming Olympics. Eusebio Unzue says he's already found new sponsor but he could not unveil they name after the TDF....

I imagine if you have been at his level for the last 3 years, staying on the high road must get harder and harder all the time.

Stay positive, AC.

- Just reading this article. Super guy. Speaks of watching Lance and talking of Jani. True sportsman is our Alberto.

It seems like eons separating this guy from Mr Say-it-to-my-face. The sport has finally get it´s true ambassador.

As for his Dauphiné. I think he did good. As he said the form wasn´t 100% coming from a long break. The purpose wasn´t to win but catching some rhytm and test a thing or to (as the TT-bike), yet he did win the prologue and L´Alpe D´Huez.

Even when not "in the zone" good Alberto has the true spirit of racing. He is a breed from the past.

Is this unique to him or do most climbers work this way? Genuine question as I am neither a climber nor knowledgeable on training methods.[/QUOTE]

I don´t think it is unique to AC. When I raced, I never went to the gym and our coach told me to spend one or two days each week training in the big chain ring.

So basically Szmyd is surprised that Contador wanted to win on l'Alpe d'Huez?

Big deal...

It seems the reason that Szmyd was not allowed to go for the win on Alp d'huez was because Bert had his team shut Szmyd down after Smyzd had turned down an offer to ride for Bert next year.

http://theinnerring.blogspot.com/2010/06/szmyd-vs-contador.html

Interesting......

Why he asked the Astana DS for the win then Bert should give it to him?
From his blog I found nothing that Astana gave their word that Szmyd could get it. They only said he should discuss it with Bert and then Bert denied. Why is he so annoyed? He helped Bert a lot before? Or Bert will give them a win when every one in peloton asked for a win at anytime?

i think the speculation is misplaced. actually it sounds like the sour grapes bs.

if szmyd wanted to win on adh he did not have to approach berto - he had to be stronger than anyone willing to win including berto. it just not hold water because brajkovic and many other good climbers would have to be approached.

My guess is that this is only partially true. Smyzd and AC were talking on Alpe d'Huez and I couldn't figure out what they were talking about. Perhaps he was offering to help AC at the Tour in exchange for the stage win and AC said no--which I wouldn't believe since he (Smyzd will have obligations to Basso, Kreuziger and Pellozotti (sp). I don't recall Smyzd offering AC any assistance in the past and approaching riders to ride for you in the future (and being turned down) has to happen quite a bit in cycling.

Seems a lot like sour grapes to me.

So to recap Tschopp is a bit of a dyck for not wanting to give Simoni the Cima Coppi and Szmyd being unhappy with Contador is sour grapes.

Contador had stated several times before the Dauphiné that he had never got to Alpe d'Huez in a race and he wanted to win that stage. Szmyd has very little to complain about

Spanish time trial champion Alberto Contador has decided to not to defend his title this year due to recent illness. The two-time Tour de France champion said he began to suffer from the flu last Saturday, and taking part in the event would not be helpful towards securing his third Tour crown.

"It's a pity, but I'm not able to attend the Spanish Championship because I have a touch of the flu. I had wanted to defend the jersey, but unfortunately I am not in good condition and I can't do anything about it,” explained Contador

I'm assuming "I'm not in good condition" is some kind of translation thing, where he actually said something along the lines of "I don't feel well today"?

Because to an english speaker... that would be an odd thing to say leading up to the Tour.

Okay... this is a bit off topic and may just be me... but I really don't think ANYONE should ASK for a win.

Offer one for help... I have no problem with that. If a guy in on the GC says... help me out and I'll let you win at the end, that seems okay to me. But begging for a win... that just seems weak.

You need the original Spanish to know for sure. He did 4.5 hours yesterday, and says that he had a long day today in the mountains (so I assume 6 hours (EDIT: Tiralongo says it was 6 hours with 3 climbs of 10-15km each)), so I think he's probably fine--can't imagine you can do 4+ hours on the bike and have the flu.

And if I recall correctly, Martinelli said he wasn't doing the time trial just after the conclusion of the Dauphine, so this may all be pre-text (i.e., bullshyte) to excuse him for not being there (i.e., wants to work on building his form more).

So does that translate to he isn't riding the race so he can take his "medicine" and avoid doping controls. :)
