He explained this. Meat is full of protein and steak due to it's very low carbohydrate levels doesn't put on weight. Contador wanted to be lean as possible for the Tourmalet. Protein on a rest day it vital. It helps repair muscle damage and aids recovery.

Nice. So his excuse is that he's on the Atkins diet?

You'd be surprised how little carbohydrate cyclists eat these days. Carbs are the main source of weight gain. Pasta is a thing of the past with cyclists. Wiggins doesn't eat bread from Janauary onwards. If you want to loose weight stop eating carbs and cycle 3 hours per day. In fact a low carb diet with one long ride a week and 3 burst sessions will be enough.

I wasn't suggesting it is impossible that some farmer somewhere was acting impropertly, but to suggest that something that happened in 1992 makes it likely in 2010 is silly.

no it's silly to think it still doesn't happen

They only silly person here is you because you couldn't read what he wrote. He didn't say that it doesn't happen anymore, he said that it isn't likely. Do you see the difference?

Spanish middle distance runners have doped and cheated for decades so this is predictable.

Pumping cows full of drugs is a dumb pastime but what can you say.. its a lame excuse for testing positive. Did any of Contadors teamates test for this drug after sitting down to dinner?! **** it I'm past caring anyway.

The person who allegedly brought the steak to Contador said "the riders" thanked him and said it was delicious. In plural. But they're all fine apparently. He also pretty much identified where he bought the steak so it should be easy for Contador to prove his innocence, right? Not that anyone will investigate, this is all about saving face.

Seriously, he knew for 6 weeks and didn't tell riis. If he is so positive :) that he is innocent then why hide it from his director.

Spaniard says he has suffered the last six weeks
.....
Contador could understand Riis's surprise. “It must have come as a big shock to him. Perhaps I should have told him sooner, but I decided ultimately that it was best for all parties not to say anything,” Contador told the Danish newspaper BT and its website, sporten.dk.

So riis lost the schlecks, then lost cancellera and gained a scandalized contador. Wow, would I like to hear riis' reaction.

That makes no scientific sense whatsoever. But if you and Contador want to stick with that theory-go for it. Bottom line any net surplus of calories will result in weight gain and any net loss will result in weight loss.

Cyclist only ate pasta in the past? Ever see "A Sunday in Hell"? Roger DeVlaeminck has a nice juicy steak for breakfast before the big race.

You are right. It might still happen. Here is the probability of that happening:

Nah, Contador's luck just ran out since there's indeed a 0.044% chance of finding meat positive for clenbutarol in Europe.

Escarabajo said:
Wow. I had not seen your comment. Thanks. I had used 20% in my calculations. Now they say that you can only get contaminated if you eat liver. LOL.

Chances of Contador telling the truth:

50%Chance the meat came from Spain x 0.044% chance of contamination x 50% chance of Vino not eating the same meat x 30% chance of eating meat two days in a row = 0.0033%

And this is being extremely generous.;)
..................................

Nobody have said that in all the cases where there has been contamination it has been with liver. Is this a non issue? I thought Contador wasn't eating liver anyway.

It would be hard to justify a reduced sanction based only on Contador's words. I expect them to stick by the meat story and attempt to prove contamination.

that could be a really interesting article considering the date...but my spanish isnt good enough to read it.

I'd like to see a story where reporters sample meat from around Spain and Irun in particular and test for Clen.

If they were fast they'd take out chances that farmers stopped using it once this story broke..

I bet they'd find 0% contamination. Just the opinion of this farm kid.

If the meat in spain is a problem, this shouldn't be an isolated issue. How many other spanish riders in the last decade have tested positive for very low levels of clen?

By the way, a lot of riders from all over train in spain. There must be more positives for low levels clen. Contador isn't the only rider eating meat.

I thought that as well. The problem is how many of those samples were sent to labs capable of testing down to the degree of accuracy of the Cologne lab.

I assume all the labs which the UCI uses, adhere to the same test technology. One would think that if Spain had an ongoing meat problem, tons of riders would test positive for clen every year during the vuelta.

No this lab in cologne can test to such low levels and probably why Contador got caught as other labs would not have discovered the low level Clen.

but there definitely needs to be a complete retesting of samples from al 2010 race winners to the same level.

The caorlie myth was debunked by sports science years ago. A calorie is not a calorie not calorie. Anyone who knows anything about cycling or any sport for that matter would never such a basic and outdated method of accounting for weight gain and loss. It's not that simple. It's also not true. Do your research son.

Of course they ate a steak before the race in the 70's because they knew nothing about what they'll eating. No one does that anymore! They get their protein after the race or stage. Steak for recovery. Thus steak after races and stages.

I would think that all the wada approved labs have similar testing abilities. So the AFLD lab which I assume in paris couldn't perform the same test as the UCI lab?
