In 2010 at Criterium International Vino and entire team did their bests to put him on top but he blew it i think at the last km.
That same year he was really prominent at LBL, and was actually considered contender number one as i recall, but ended up just working as a distraction for the main man.

His allergies acted up on the one summit finish stage and he was unable to climb at his usual level. He had the form evidenced later by this performance in the ITT. At least that's how I remember it.

He has never focussed on them. Firstly, because it doesn't really seem to fit in with his stage-racing ambitions - which is probably due tot the fact it's not really in the Spanish (cycling) culture to focus one one day races, especially if you're such a phenomanal stage racer. Secondly, we can't forget Contador has an allergy problem, which will always be a problem in the April classics...

His performance in 2010's Fleche Wallone and LBL (riding for Vino) shows he's capable of contending in both events when on form.

and should we blame him for that? he is just being smart. . .

looks like gentleman while collecting friends in the peloton

Real men collect stage victories, and wear them in a necklace like shrunken heads around their necks, just ask "The Cannibal."

I have to agree with Cioppolini, It is almost like the manliness has gone out of cycling. At least we have Gilbert and Cancellera, "Real Men" in the great tradition of cycling.

cancellara a real man lol because real man tell an entire peloton to stop to wait for 2 guys that can't stay on their bikes, and whines every single time a classic doesn't go in his favour.

also contador may give away stages but he is a million times the man most guys in the peloton are, name a more aggressive GC rider? name a guy that races more for the win through the year? name a guy that doesn't complain like contador when faced with huge adversities?

You are insane...wasn't Mario talking about Fabian specifically when he called them all sissies?

We'll need you to present your credentials that prove your worthiness in judging who is and isn't a "real man".;) Otherwise you need to be speaking in an itty bitty voice, that matches what you've previously shown in your posts to be your true stature.

Cancellara is just an enforcer for the 'little boy' Andy Schleck.

I don't know about manliness, but Contador proved his great mental toughness by enduring the behaviour of Lance and Brynell in the 2009 TdF.

saying sorry to andy schleck yeah that's manly.sorry... contador is a goddamn big champion but you can't say he's a patron,a boss.merckx now that was manly!hinault even better he had the right to do nasty things to any guy in the peloton.lance, the boss,he would have chased you down if you said something about his friend michele.now that's manly.
alberto is just a silent, calm, classy, shy big big champion.same as indurain.
i don't say that one of this style of behaving is bad or good but that's just how i see it.

Well, if an entire peloton stops after his words then they are either fools or the guy has authority. As i don't think they are fools then the only reason is authority and this value is not easy to gain.
The reason why he plays the role of Andy's nanny is the other question not relative to whether he is a 'real man' or not.

I just can't see how being a patron and being a boss has something to do with manliness.

And I think that someone can perfectly be both shy and calm and manly at the same time. I despise loud, bragging men but does that mean I despise the manly and fall for the less manly? I don't think so.

It is a nice change to see someone so good a bit more humble than especially American athletes. I grew up watching Randy Moss play football... I HATE that type of athlete.

Yea.

Class, combined with skill is the best. As big NHL fan, there are quite a few classy, skilled players. Not so many in NFL, some in baseball, practically none in NBA.

I think in cycling, Contador has his goals and he has been able to help guys achieve things they may never get a chance to do otherwise. Saint Alberto! Just kidding, but seriously, motives or not he is a nice guy with what he has done.

Who's the equivalent of Randy Moss in Football, a.k.a Soccer for Americans? That will give global meaning to which you're trying to say. ;)

I do not know a direct comparison, but a cocky, classless, showoff, complainer, not a good teammate, stat padder, all about the money.

You know, there are likely more humble big name American athletes than there are obnoxious/arrogant ones.

You obviously don't follow NBA much at all. For every one you think lacks the combination of class and skill I can name at minimum 2 or three that do.

Absolutely true, but the obnoxious ones get all the media and get shown the most. I would prefer to hear more about the players with class.

By the way, I agree with your second paragraph. :)

With the advent of the world wide web, I'm quite certain if you wanted to find out more about a certain player you'd easily have a plethora of info at your disposal.

Ok I made a generalization, if they are in the NBA, then 99.99% they are skilled. But I cannot believe that 66.67% or 75% that you claim are classy players. About 400 active NBAers at a time, I do think it would be hard to find 100 or more that are not classy.

I also do not watch NBA, NFL, or MLB. Boring.

Very true, NBA might be the worst of the 4 U.S. sports in showing their classy players.

Hmm...Ronaldinho really?

It's true that both are/were very talented, yet I don't see Ronaldinho being all that.

Btw, isn't Tevez like that?
