Coronavirus: How dangerous a threat?

Page 377 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
Tokyo numbers appear to be on the way down, the official peak was around 22/23k for about a week, last week numbers were mainly below 15/16k. No of deaths today was 120.

Awhile ago I had an antibody test - ie - blood test to see if I'd recently had covid (not to see if I currently have it), mainly to rule it out as possible cause for some minor GI issues I was having for a few months since earlyish December (much better now).

The City of Boise just dropped the mask mandate which should see the rest of them go too because many places had mask mandates to comply.

The powers that be at my work have been quiet since they sent us the opinion poll about masks. We might hear something today since the city dropped theirs.
-Boise School District dropped their mask mandate yesterday.

-My work is now mask optional, with masks encouraged for groups.

EDIT: The results of the poll were:

Should continue- 10%
Probably should continue- 26%
OK if it continues- 45%
OK if it doesn't continue- 18%
Probably should end- less than 1%
Should end- less than 1%

This is company wide, not just my site. FYI: I voted 'probably should continue'. Ask me again in a month...

You are beginning to sound optimistic? My company still requires approval to go to the office and you are required to wear masks. But they are now indicating imminent plans to allow us to return to the office without prior approval.

Covid hospitalizations and ICU patients here have bottomed out:
Daily Cases Admitted to Hospital - COVID Live

Overall Australia shows just 114 cases as serious or critical out of 266k total active cases. 0.04%. Still about 35 deaths per day though (7 day moving average).

Things don't look too much different at work. The only thing that I noticed was a few people not wearing their masks walking down the halls. I didn't have any face to face meetings today so I don't know how that will look yet...meeting in the morning though.

A friend of mine just got infected with Omicron a few days ago and thinks she picked it up at the gym. She's tripled vaxxed and hasn't needed to go to hospital but in her words "its nasty". Bad cough, headaches and fatigue, some breathlessness. When I spoke to her on the phone she sounded terrible like she was suffering with an A plus version of the flu.

Hmmmm. Wastewater levels in Boston have leveled off to. Possibly a prelude to another surge in cases.

According to some here within the topic discussion, the triple vax stopped transmission.
Not sure who on the forum might have guessed that it was an absolute prevention but; closer to home another family member who is triple vaxxed got Omicron. I didn't but that's for now. We live in an area with some transient tourist traffic so it's never safe to assume you're free of exposure. Sucks, doesn't it?

PS: Idaho is awash with anti-vaxxers and extended communities that follow their own sense of "science" so there is that constant influence. Probably why more people have died here than in many other developed countries.
They did die free, though. Hopefully they didn't take anyone with them.

I think that the only people who say things like "I thought that the vax was supposed to keep you from getting it" are anti vaxxers.

The second purpose of vaccines was to reduce transmission - Unfortunately, this has not proven as successful as hoped. Using labels like anti-vaxxer etc does not help the debate.

In the instance of our location the historical presence of larger communal groups that, for perceived health or religious reasons always resist vaccination ; identifying that resistance is totally relevant. Even more so when they are demonstratively resistant.
It's one thing to resist based on personal belief and the willingness to own the consequences of that free choice. Quite another when there is a "movement" based on collective philosophies and beliefs that rally around a single issue and seek to disrupt efforts to curb a disease. Even going so far as to disrupt the business and life of others to demonstrate authority to prevent the effort....what to make of it? Just a sign of the times, I guess.

Most of us gave up on that false promise months ago. You are right that name calling and stereotyping people only hardens resolve and is counter productive.
Is anti vax name calling? How about 'people who refuse vaccines'? Its not a name or a label, its a fact. Most of the people who haven't gotten vaccinated, use the tern 'anti vax' to describe themselves with pride.

Does it sound better if I say people who have refused the SC2 vaccine are the only ones who make statements like 'I thought that the vaccine was supposed to keep you from getting the virus'?

Omicron certainly threw a curveball into the transmission equation, but vaccines did reduce transmission in prior variants which likely reduced suffering and saved lives.

The smart thing to do would be clear and repetitive public messaging that vaccination reduces your likelihood of going to hospital or dying. TV, Radio, Web, social media. Then nobody can argue with you.

But who told the public a while back that vaccination would stop transmission - Experts I suppose? Complain about them?

But if people refuse vaccines and end up in hospital or worse they can't say they were not warned.

It is somewhat subjective but in my opinion labeling people "anti-vaxxer" is name calling - counter productive. The right way is don't label them at all. They are members of society just like you and me. We need to bring them with us.

As you might recall I am vaccinated so regard myself as a fair judge. Yes what might have worked to curb transmission with prior variants was no longer relevant with omicron. But we need to adjust our language and respond the messaging much faster to evolving variants. But when you "p" people off- guess what, they won't do what you want. Human nature IMO.
