He was great in the team pursuit, just kept saying how well USA were doing and how they were running away with it etc., forgetting to look at the lap times and see Italy catch up and pass them

The thing that's crazy is he's done speed skating several times and he actually appears to know LESS now than when I first heard him do it.
It's where he came up with the epic shout about Jordan Stolz "sometimes a man has to step into the limelight, AND HE'S! JUST! CHANGED! THE! BULB!".
And where he was wittering on about the celebrations of the Dutch winning the Team Pursuit despite the screen clearly showing another team celebrating and Joy Beune crying and pleading with the judges, and he was busy writing confused mixed-metaphor soliloquies about how happy the Dutch team would be, then getting completely confused when the classified result came up and the Dutch weren't at the top because they'd been disqualified, a fact plainly obvious to anybody capable of the sense of sight. "Wait a minute... just wait a minute!" he would exclaim, then insisting that nobody knew what was going on when everybody had clearly been demonstrating all of the body language in the world to illustrate what was happening for a good two minutes while he was digging into his book of nonsense rather than looking at the monitors.

Tough conditions when over half the field fails to finish. Richardson Viano of Haiti had a faster second run than McGrath at the last Olympics, so it's far from over.

A beautiful comeback by Miura and Kihara in figure skating. They were under pressure after performing below par yesterday, and although they ultimately wouldn't have had to skate as well as they did, their new free skate WR certainty sealed the deal and must have made the remaining pairs feel somewhat scared.
Georgia gets silver despite doing something which people with far more figure skating than me calls a very ugly death spiral, but the Germans were not able to keep their very high level from the short program, which would otherwise have secured silver.
Germany also lost out on gold at the very end of the women's monobob competition.

Could someone explain a bit more about the Norwegian slalom racer who walked off into the woods after crashing out (rather than going into the finish area and all the cameras).
His grandfather died the day of the Opening Ceremony, and it's been a rough couple of days on a private level for him, so he wanted some alone time after suffering the biggest disappointment of his career.

The Czechs have advanced by beating Denmark 3-2 in hockey, I do not see them getting past Canada in the next round though. Ooooof. And the ladies have taken the ice in short program figure skating... while it's been a few years it still seems odd to me to not see the Russians compete. Something is missing, definitely in figure skating at least.

Japan keeps being big in Milan when it comes to figure skating. They occupy 1st, 2nd and 4th going into the women's free skate. As per usual not everyone is happy with the judges, but perhaps things will be fixed, one way or another, on Thursday.
The Czechs are carrying on the historical hockey legacy of the former Czechoslovakia, which was closest competitor for the dominant USSR teams of the mid-50s through 70s. They medaled in five consecutive Olympics during that era, though never gold.

Indeed; my family and I hail from the CSSR before it was split up into Czechia and Slovakia decades ago... while I was a bit too young to understand the political climate surrounding me at the time listening to my dad talk any hockey game between the CSSR and USSR was a total, politically charged hate fest which the USSR always won. GRRRRRR. Politics + sports, what a timeless combination, eh?
I'll be cheering for Czechia but have no illusions they can beat Canada, and I won't mind because I like the Canucks.

Egads, I've completely overlooked that figure skating allows for neutral athletes and that there are a few Russian ones in these Olympics who are competing under a neutral flag! It's not the same as competing for your own flag though I think...
