Could a doped EPO Era "1 day classics rider" win the TdF 7 Times in a Row?

I would argue correctly - No Way.

Others would argue "of course, its already been done - Lance"
To those "others" I ask the question....name another besides Lance....

Johan Museeuw? No way Museeuw. Could barely finish doped to the gills.

Michele Bartoli? Maybe win 1 in a row. But 7? Doubt it. Too small a bike.

Frank Vandenbroucke? Potential for maybe 3 in a row. But a bit fragile mentally bless his soul.

Laurent Jalabert? Hmmmm...he WAS awesome. Kinda like Lance. But he was doped right? And still did not win one. Win 7 in a row? Nope sorry.

Spartacus? He is awesome too! But could dope turn him into a strong enough climber to win one two three four five six seven in a row? You think?

So, was Lance One of a Kind?
I already Know the Answer to that one lol!

I am starting to think 'Polish' is Matthew McConaughey.

Matthew - the answer is yes (to the thread title), if you check the winner from 1999 - 2005 he was a one day racer who won 7 Tours. But i would hurry to check that before an asterisk is added.

Is HE one of a kind - yes, I don't believe any of the others you named had an arrangement with Dr. Ferrari or the UCI.

Outside of Lance, no other 1 day rider could win the TdF repeatedly.
Even doped to the gills.
Lance was one of a kind.
Will never see 7 in a row again.

Correct Armstrong was a one-of-a-kind doped rider.

Will we ever see 7 in a row again? Ask again in 5 years.

But Dr, could you name a another classics rider (besides Lance) that could win the TdF 7 times with Mr Ferrari's help? Hypothetically, but realistically too?

Doubt that you can.
It is more than Mr Ferrari.

If you watched any of the tours in question, you would have seen 5-6 Disco / Postal guys hammering the final mountain of each stage. It was not only LA on the gear, but a very dedicated, focused and well-trained team helping him.

Now consider the only race he prepared for and competed in, and you see more truth revealed.

People like Evans have not won, but they compete consistenly, all year long.

Your boy LA was a real one hit wonder.

Yes Lance was focused.
One of the many reasons, besides doping, for his unprecedented 7 in a row.

And Cadel has never been accused of being a 1 day racer only.

The question requires a multifactorial answer.

But, I think since winning the TdF is a TEAM sport that relies on a champion leader...my answer will mostly be a single answer: no. Lance is a lot of things including a profound doper, however, he and the Hog were smart enough to maintain a team of captains making them the most powerful team year after year. Oh, and winning the TTTs and forcing the hand of all the other team leaders on successive mountain stages didn't hurt either. They almost blew it though in 2003 when JU almost beat them with his weak support. That's my take.

but in 5 years contador would have only have won it 6 times in a row as he skipped a year of attendance (assuming he wins them all of course)

Hmm, your definition of "Classics" rider probably differs from mine - I usualy reserve it for someone who has won at least a monument.

Perharps you missed Vinokourov's sudden ambition to be a Tour winner when he teamed up with Dr. Ferrari.

Yes, TEAM Sport with a Champion Leader.
A profound Doper with a team of captains. Frankie. Big George. Floyd. Eki.
Yes, a strong TTT and strong ITT.
And doper JU WOULD have won in 2003 if he attacked like Contador.

But my original questions remains.
What other 1 day racer could have done what Lance did.
Hypothetically. Boonen with dope? Argentin?

Vino has class, no doubt.
But he has never been considered a one day rider only.

So - Vino was recognised as a Tour contender from his Casino days??

He was doped to the gills - but only got on the Ferrari programme 06/07, I cant remember where he finished there.

Vino with a USPS team, Ferrari and UCI in the pocket - yes.

I think, and i may be wrong here, that Polish is saying that Lance Armstrong is the greatest doped rider of all times.

And Polish I agree with you :D for the moment

but, then i think about Merckx, and i laugh at my statement above

I remember reading a "Cycle Sport" article about Lance right before he was diagnosed with cancer*. They quoted, I believe either Jim Osch or perhaps Wetzel as saying (and I am paraphrasing) that when Armstrong wasn't into it(racing) he road at 70%. Just something to think about ...

*This would have been late 1995 or early 1996. Does anybody know which CS it's from? I've wanted to dig it up but my attic is vast and I kinda want to know where to look!
