Very hard stage, the favorable wind(no clue what he means by that) and the heat hurt! I was badly placed with 10km to go and with the corners and the speed I wasn't able to return to the front.

Aka I sucked.

Vent favorable = tail wind. If that hurts him, you are right: he svcks :D

Thanks guys:)
All the BMC domestiques were helping evans at the front. Thought they could have sent some to help bring Gilbert to the front, but he was stuck in the middle of the pack. It was all for evans today. Surely Gilbert had a better shot than evans today.

Preparations for Tour I would guess. Same thing Sky does with EBH. Both stages suited him okay but in both he worked a lot, same with Gilbert with him possibly working for Evans and planning tactics etc. how it will look overall at the Tour, plans etc.

Well I can see BMC letting Gilbert loose on stage 1, its at liege after all. He won't have much chances to ride for himself though.

He shouldn't even be in the Tour with that shape if you ask me.

They really can't take away his spot, the start is at liege. It would just be cruel.
And his form is nowhere close to last year, but its not too bad. Still time to improve for le tour, he has a shot for the first stage too. He will do work for cadel too.

Smiled ? Yes.. ;)

Yes I missed that ( brief?) smile. Podium footage SBS was less than perfect. I perceived serious face, noted an apparent "hurry up" to jersey assistant and a rushed departure from stage.

I noted beaming smiles from other podium visitors.

However I do concede I saw a fraction of the footage available.

Marks reassessed to 4/10.

Not too bad? The guy won at will last year, what can he show this year? A podium in FW? Good for someone else, horrible for a rider like Gilbert.

A tail wind means it is very hard to close any gap or move up the field if the guys in front are giving it full gas as you cannot go faster.

Even a 'bad' Gilbert is good enough to make BMC's Tour selection. Who should they pick instead of him?

from today stage 2 things to watch out:

- Juanjo Cobo not loosing time! if he completes a decent dauphine, be sure he will scary at the TdF

- Mikel Landa, 2th on today's stage. I wont let go him too far in the coming mountain stages... he is gonna be this year climbing sensation

This. I mean losing time to Bruno Pires on a stage like this... I expect a disastrous TT, below top50. What's up with him? Does he even know what he's aiming for? It seems this year his schedule is a bit random, a little bit of everything withouth having any goals set to himself.

i dunno what's up with him, he also lost time to bruno pires on the prologue!!!!!!!!!!!

this is the worse he has been performing in years, he will lose tons of time on the itt while usually he would be up there in the top 10.

Landa was 20th on today's stage and yes he's a great talent. Looking forward to see him excel anytime soon.

If you reread his comments, it is clear what he means. The the pace was super high due to the tailwind, at 10km to go he was out of position and as a result of the twisting run in and the pace he was unable to pick his way back up to the front. It had SFA to do with condition.

Same goes for a certain Chris Froome. He seems to be finally good this season

yes, I meant 20th. He might be very high at Joux Plane. Regarding Froome, yes he is also very scary for TDF.

I wouldnt be surprise to be surprised by a win a la Hesjedal by Cobo or Froomy at TdF

come one... a rider like him is hot able to get a good position in 10k???

he's really poor this year...

Depends, if you weren't in the front 50 at 6-8km to go you were toast, that was a fast run in. Even the best get caught out sometimes ;)

If everything was as it should be you would be in the front 50 with 6-8 km to go. He looks exactly as he did 2 months ago.

63 Denis Menchov (Rus) Katusha Team 0:27

Not as bad as Andy, but not impressive by any stretch of the imagination.

People over-rate him in my opinion for this Tour anyway becasue he won GT's few years ago.

Top 5/7 contender but not much more in my humble opinion.

I rate Gesink, JvDB higher than Menchov for Tour.

Because he has been the best long TTer in GTs over the past 5 years.

It's a valid reason to expect good things, even if he may well be on the decline.
