Which Zipp rims are you talking about? All the V3's, 1080's and discs and older carbon rims are made in Speedway. Aluminum rims were Chaiwan as you say. 101's are made by Alex. Sram wheels, old Zipp molds but made in ASia. Components, Asia.

They are Zipp's 'Black Label' line, made in Taiwan, available blank for OEM use. You wouldn't know this by just looking at the website, they are strictly available to wheel Co's and wheel builders only.

RDV4, why do you choose EDCO for some wheels and Alchemy hubs for carbon wheels?

Thanks.

RDV4ROUBAIX said:
I use the EDCO Super G in all of my builds for the last 11 years. Ambrosio rims I mainly use are the Excellence and Nemesis, some Excellight SSC, Crono F20, and Montreal. Velocity A23's and Major Tom's. For carbon race wheels I recently started using Alchemy hubs and ENVE rims. Sapim Race has been my mainstay spoke for many years, CX-Ray for all the pure race applications, DT's in a emergency. Making the switch to Pillar as soon as I'm out of my Sapim stock, probably during this winter sometime.

I've got customers in just about all of Europe, and the whole of England, Scotland, Ireland. None in Italy. Can't ship there because the Italian package handlers are notorious for stealing and damaging the goods inside. :(

Cost and weight. EDCO Super G hubs are in the same price and weight spec range as a DT 240 set, slightly cheaper actually. Alchemy weigh less and cost a bit more, so far they've been for race only apps, carbon. Haven't had a customer yet request Alchemy hubs laced up with Ambrosio Nemesis for instance, but that would be a helluva wheel set.

Bustedknuckle and RD4, any opinions on the HED C2 alu rims?

I've had mine for two seasons now and they taken some fairly decent abuse (big potholes, crashes) and are still true and round.

They were built with DT revolution spokes laced to DT240s.

Those HED Belgium rims that you're rolling are pretty stout, 240's good, you're only getting away with Revolution spokes because those rims are slightly heavier than what they use in the production wheels. I would use Sapim Laser instead of Revolutions, which tend to stretch out more than Lasers, and not in a complete wheel set unless it was for a real lightweight rider. Curious, how much do you weigh? Who built them?

170lbs. http://handspunwheels.com/

DT Aerolites... not revolutions.

In case anyone is interested, got the wheel back from the shop (they did not charge me)

they said they could not really see the root cause of the problem and asked a couple of times how old the wheel was (6 months)

the guy said the tension had backed off a bit in some of the spokes (sorry if that sounds rubbish but i think that is what he said) and that some of the nipples had come undone. he said they ahd straightened and if i still had issues i could take it back and get them to put some scew locker on the nipples (which i think a couple of people mentioned before) but as that was a bigger task and they did not originally do the wheel they would charge me

will see how it goes

Thanks. I'll have to ask. I have many friends at Zipp, toured their facilities many times and rebuild more Zipp wheels than they do.

and with what hubs, spokes and rims? Ambrosio?

have yet to see a set of RDV4Roubaix wheels or bustedknuckles yet in europe, but show us what you got.:)

Hubs-Campagnolo, PhilWood, Alchemy, shimano, maybe the new King r45.

Rims-DT, Ambrosio, Velocity, even some Sun or Kinlin depending on the rider.

Not all Mavic are junque..CXP-33 and OpenSport are OK. A719 also. Some of their MTB rims, disc type altho the tubeless ones are time consuming to lace.

I use DT spokes but if I could get all lengths of Sapims, Laser, CX-Ray and Race, silver and black, I would use them but alas....

Excuse me, not 'Black Label', it's called 'Private Label'. Just looked up my old price sheet from 3 years ago to compare prices. Sounds like you're in deep with Zipp, but you should consider changing allegiances to ENVE. They make a much nicer rim, and their completes are better built than anything Zipp, that's why you're "rebuilding" a lot. Just a thought. ;)

Huh. I don't *think* my Open Pros have that - the rear did, but I had a busted nipple which I got fixed.

Good to hear that they're not charging you for return trips, too bad they couldn't fix it proper the 1st time. Hope you have better luck down the road. Happy riding!

Interesting, I'm in frequent contact with a shop owner that dumped QBP's Handspun after not one, but two wheel sets fell apart on his customers. You gotta love QBP for trying, but branding their wheel dept. "Handspun" is kind of misnomer, most of the wheels that go out of there are run through a machine. Even though yours were hand built start to finish, hence the Aerolites, be weary my friend, be weary. There's only so much a wheel can take, especially if you're crashing like you stated before.

What's the long-standing problem with Open Pros you were referring to?

Wedge installed to hold rim together for welding often comes loose and noisy eyelets. Both problems Mavic has known about since the welded seam came out 15 or more years ago but they refuse to acknowledge it's a problem, refuse to fix it. That with the crappy plastic bushing in the Krysirum and others freehub, 2 pawl, 1980s hub design in $2000 wheels, pitiful.

Spoke cutter much? :D

Take a hard look at Pillar Spoke, their tripple butted spokes in the PSR family are basically a db spoke with reinforced to 2.2mm at the elbow and are the same weight as a DT Comp or Sapim Race. They also have Taper Grip nipples with 7 degree pitch tapered thread, no more BS thread locking compounds, just lube. 30 color choices, all lengths, and all about the same pricing as Sapim, some slightly cheaper. The stainless wire that they use is top notch Sandvik T302, so quality isn't a question, no wonder so many builders are switching. ;)

All of my Mavic hoops have been fine and with the current cheapies, 2009 Aksium Race, my luck seems to holding. Thanks to Busted and RDV4 for the warnings, will steer clear in future.

My favourite thing about Mavics has always been the ease of getting tires on and off - I often don't need tire levers. It's probably been asked and answered elsewhere, but what are the Ambrosios like for tire fitting?

I know about Campag in this regard - had some nightmare fittings with early 90s Michelins. How about the aforementioned Velocity, DT. etc?

Busted and RDV4, do you ship to Australia? I'm sure your stuff is worth it.

The rims I use, Ambrosio and Velocity, just added H Plus Son, have all been very consistent as far as tire fitting. High level of QC means they don't let their rim extrusion plates wear out and have BSD under tight control.

I ship everywhere, except Italy ;)

I cut my spokes in my freetime, from 2 till 4 in the morning......

Do just fine with DT thanks, no need to switch. Paceline is a great company, has all lengths, all types plus rims and hubs. Great pricing free shipping, 2 day service, .....
