We need an in depth interview like the ones that nyvelocity publishes. I am not even sure if that clown from Pez actually listened to what was said.

...so let get this straight...this guy at Pez comes up with a great absolutely need to be told story...goes thru the trouble of doing it..and gets it published...when no one else had the balls and/or imagination to do the same....and he is a clown!...

...as compared to all the other more respected more talented non-clowns who didn't come up with this story?????...

...words fail me (...actually they don't, but there is a moratorium on spirited debate on these pages as of late, so I'll just keep my peace...but you can probably guess what I'm thinking...hint...it ain't pretty... )...

Cheers

I read the interview when RR first posted it, and just reading again now.

As much I blame the "docs" and DS's for perpetuating the scourge of all the illicit activity that goes on in cycling, Darryl's story really does put the onus back on the rider's themselves. Because, ya' know, they are ultimately the ones making their own decisions.

I'm not ignorant of the fact that many sociological factors come into play as to why certain decisions are made by the riders--and maybe (probably) Darryl had a stronger moral base than some from which to make his own decisions--but it still really does come down to them.

"Just Say No."
Who would've thought?

Good on ya' Darryl.
Wishing you the best.

Great stuff Darryl. These stories are the most interesting and fullfilling in cycling. Good luck with yor current pursuits - pun intended.

Thanks, enjoyed the interview. It sounded like the interviewer got a little more than he bargained for. :) Still, even if he was unprepared for the implications of Darryl's history, I took his closing comment as a supportive compliment, a lament for talent unfulfilled. The Sky bit opens up another avenue of thought!

Sorry, Francis, but some of us are not satisfied with cycling sites copying the same format as the print media. There are no restrictions on article length on the web. I would rather read a long and detailed interview using an interviewer that I do not feel is just going through the motions. I would like to see follow up questions asked that are based on the content of previous answers. When the interviewee brings up something interesting, I would rather have it explored more fully than the interviewer continuing on as though he did not even hear the answer. There is a great story there, but all the Pez clown did was peak the readers' interest.

Someone give Kimmage a call.

Just to clear up a few ponits: The interview was via E mail. I typed my replies and with the acception of a couple of names removed for legal reasons and spelling correction its as I replied.
Its not as in depth as could be because I didnt go into great detail.
I totaly accept web site opperaters / journo`s have to keep to the side of legal challenge they can afford/ dare make.

"Rife " drug use doesnt mean everyone...each of us will no doupt have our own definition of rife. Is 10% rife?...30%.....50%...80%?.

RE my perinum surgery ( look away now if squeemish:D).. In the 88 Girvan stage race a cyst ballooned to the size of goll ball. Surgey consisted of draining it and then opening it up and packing it with iodean soaked gause ( stings a bit !)to keep it sterile while it healed from the inside out. I was kept in hospital a week and then had to change the dressing myself daily. Given it`s position cycling was clearly not possible and I kept fit by swimming around 50 lengths a day for the 6 weeks I was off in total from April onwards.
Cheers.

The feeling when they pull out and change the gauze again is great, isn't it ? :D
Especially when end of 3-4 metres of gauze is reached.
The smell of betaisodona and that other yellow stuff is really great too, because smell even stays in your body for some time.

Its funny how Daryl's opinions are remarkably similar to many in the clinic but I have seen the clinic posters described as a bunch of loons on another website. Ah, the Koolaid crew.

Where, RBR?

That is the impression I got from reading it. Darryl would mention doping, and Pez would skip by it and on to something else. Pretty weak interview on the part of the interviewer.

As for Darryl, he has been a valuable asset for this forum since coming here, and it's always interesting to read what he writes.

I usually enjoy reading your posts, but I didn't enjoy reading that.

That was when I learned that it sometimes makes no sense to be a hard man and to handle it like John Rambo in the jungle.
Sometimes it is better to consult a doctor (earlier). :)

Hats off, Darryl ! You're, I guess, one of the handful riders to have defeated a probably still clean Museeuw. :D

Shame you didn't talk about your meeting with Moser to whom you once said "Hi, Frank" and which he didn't quite appreciate. :p

Nice itw, anyway. ;)

Really enjoyed reading the interview, bar the perineum bit! I remember the Wheelers being on the front of the Comic virtually revery week due to you, Pete Longbottom or Paul Curran winning.

Nice TT work, pure class...... and I'm not talkin the Vino kind.

Quick TT work, on standard bikes I loved reading those old Brit cycling magazines, very impressive.

My god, the golden era of Brit domestic racing, Alas Pete Longbottom is no longer with us but he could ride and Curran was something else. But Webster was revered as the classiest rider those days.

I was down to ride in a race against Curran as youngster in a club race but pulled out due to illness. lucky for me I think. :)

A Manchester Wheeler powerhouse !!!!!!

Every Friday evening I was raised on a weekly diet of Webster's racing career via the reading about his exploits in "Cycling Weekly". I had to read the mag quick as when the old man got home it was his mag - it was his subscription that paid for it.

Darryl. From the below image, name me the year, the riders, the event. Its Ok I tell you the location as a snapped this wee pict at the time. Hope it brings back a few good memories for you.
