So it seems Team Sky were divided in two at the finish today..

One group sorrounding Viviani and one Porte...

Why not let Viviani ride for himself as long as Porte has a real shot at winning the whole god damn thing?

Of course it was bad luck for Porte, but if he had had a teammate close to him with a bike he could ride he would not have lost time...

You can bet on no accidents but is betting two horses how you eliminate potential issues..?

Marginal Gains needs an overhaul..

Because Sky are the most tactically amateurish team ever assembled. For a team that has so many big wins recently, they have absolutely no tactical sense whatsoever. The juice can only carry you so far.

If you look back at the TDF coverage in 2013, it seems that there was always a Sky rider near the back of the bunch especially once things started going uphill, presumably the one with the nearest bike fit to Froomedawg.

So its not like they haven't looked at this sort of thing before. Maybe no-one comes close to LRP's bike size ?

Yes, I also wondered if Brailsford may not trust Porte (´s ability) enough to sacrifice everything else for his win?

Not that it is that big a deal, but they did seem very keen on him FTW and with a form that should warrant full support... Maybe it was their last go with Porte so why not go full on....

In the world of sport, Sir David John Brailsford CBE
is known as the Mastermind, however if rock and
roll was his vocation the NME would surely have
bestowed him with Godlike Genius status at their
annual awards by now, as the OP suggests. :)

He showed true mastermind status today. Not one rider with his team leader, when it mattered. The mark of a genius.....my friend.

wasn't one of Froome's excuses for sucking so badly on Sky before the '11 Vuelta was because he had to ride with a bike that would fit Wiggins in case he needed it?

You're right!

Another fine example of Sky's marginal truthiness.

I have seen worse in the Porte thread. Something about eunuchs and midgets. Aah yes those cycling fans are a creative lot.

"(Team Principal) Dave Brailsford said 'we're going to win the time trial'. It didn't matter who, but we're going to win it. He told me at breakfast that I was going to have my chances today. I've had really good feelings over the last couple of days. I had a good warm-up today and everything went okay!"

That's a Sir Genius at work.

I do wonder what he will tell LPR tomorrow morning.

I also got that vibe from Dave. The way he so pointedly said that Tinkov Saxo were the best team in May can only mean that Froome is gonna go Vroooom.

Wtf? Brailsfraud praises not only Dirtie but also Olga for being a big plus for sport - but in such a way that it somehow reads as a warning between the lines: Yeah, you got us here, but wait for the Tour! As if there was something new on the market but LRP is not a good responder to it. But DB hell knows Vroomie is, and responds brutally. Alien reloaded.

Sorry, why would it be remarkable that he praises Contador? Or "Dirtie" as you put it? Are you actually under the illusion that Sky are clean and as such would never praise dopers? You might want to check your history of Sky and Sky rider comments. Dopers have been praised far and wide for some time.

Wake up, my friend.

Wake up, my friend.

OK, translation: apart from the standard praising of Conti (everyone's doing it after Mortirolo stage) he started with this strange praisetalk about Oleg Tinkoff, which somehow raised the eyebrows, and not only mine, at least from reading various comments, that's it (and Bertie's win or die attitude throughout his career is great, nobody's disputing it, however doped he may or may not be).

And what? Sky clean? The point was that from that talk I got an impression they did "something (clinical) wrong", but they know it will work with Froome in July that's why this "TS is best May team" (meaning "but wait for July").

Btw. how about the Brailsford's old prophecy of "new clean french TdF winner" he would like to coach? Were they after someone (already pro)? Or they have some youngster in the "transformation" process?

Remember that Dave B and Tinkov have a good working relationship. When Rogers got too hot for Sky to handle, Saxo took him off their hands for nothing, Sky even paid Rogers wages. De Jongh and Julich have also ended up there so there's plenty in common for them and good reason to keep things civil and cordial between them.

I don't know about the state of the "good working relationship" after Oleg's twitter joke about Italian hotels and buying a RV...

Oleg doesn't have friends...he has acquaintances and they come and go at his whim.....bet Brailsford aint that loyal.......

I wouldn't trust either of them, I'd guess they are in a state of detente. A bit of banter is fine but neither is going to accuse the other of doing what they know they are doing.

I was at a bike race the other day (in the UK) and I got talking to someone about team Sky. I mentioned the transformations of donkeys to racehorses, I mentioned the team's transformation post Leinders, I mentioned the long list of staff with doping backgrounds, I mentioned Brailsford not being able to keep a story straight even within the same interview. The individual I was speaking to got rather irate, almost aggressive in his defence of Sky.

That Brailsford can evoke this sort of religious belief in people, while blatantly taking the piss out of them, means he must be genius of some sort.

It's not Brailsford, it's not the media - there is no strategy, just opportunism. It is base nationalism and people not wanting their dreams shattered. It is us and them. The emperor has no clothes
