Davide Rebellin and a formula 1 driver are being investigated for Tax evasion. From living abroad and not paying taxes on their visits.

I thought alot of athletes claimed residency in places like Monaco, so they don't have to pay the taxes?? I guess they are finally deciding to come down hard on it.

From recollection didn't they get 'Super Mario' for something like this??

If you spend more than a certain number of days in a country, they will claim that you are a resident and will tax you. The exact number is usually between 90 and 183 days. For Italy, it is 183 days. They will also consider you a resident if your life is centered in Italy, whatever that means. You always have to pay tax over income earned in Italy, even if you are not a resident.

Interestingly, the whereabouts system means that pro cyclists have a very accurate record of where they spend their time, so an innocent rider could just hand over the whereabouts forms.

Yes, right outside Lucca.

Well if your not going to pay your taxes, you could at least do it properly and actually wake up each morning in Monaco, not in Lucca.

David Miller was the same. Had to pay back €812,000 to the French government.
