The other way of looking at his Giro is that he gained time on everyone but Simon Yates in Stage 10-21, after being four minutes down on Del Toro after the first week. There is clearly a lot of potential there, given it was his third ever GC and his second top 10 in a row.
I still feel like we are missing the obvious point when talking about 'deserving millions'. IPT have the money to pay him millions, and he is obviously their best rider so they would be happy to match and exceed any Ineos offer in terms of wages. This is a decision based mostly on sporting, not financial, ambition – the only financial upside probably exclusive to Ineos is the one you get from winning more races, not from his salary.
