Teams & Riders Derek Gee is the new G

Gee should easily be worth 9M in total for a 3y contract. Ineos won't get a better GC rider for less money than that.

And 3M is way too little compensation. If they truly have the final say, Israel should never agree to that.
There is no way he is worth 3m a year. He is lucky to get a top 8-10 at the Tour against real competition

Having a raise be triggered by a top 5 Grand Tour GC or monument podium would feel like a fair clause for both rider and team management.
The only drawback I can see is if it makes riders ride selfishly to secure the bag, or if a team refrains from racing a rider (fairly or not) which deprives said rider of the chance to fight for the result.

I guess you could additionally have a clause that rewards a certain measurable level of fitness (6.Xw/kg for 20 minutes). After that point the failure or success to actually secure results is largely down to the team's management, supporting riders, luck, etc. Obviously this is not exactly the same thing as actual victories, or Jay Vine would be a top 5 rider. But it protects the team against slackers like Alaphilippe and it protects the rider against spiteful maneuvers like keeping Gee from going to Vuelta.

The more I think about it, the more I think contracts should just be 2 years long. Everything else is straight up gambling on what the future might hold. The rider is buying puts from the team on their own performance, which weirdly incentivizes them to stop trying, at least if they are inherently lazy/easily distracted.

Absolute fair dinkum Geenius.

He won his 4th place in the Giro, much like a certain Ozzy lad did, because the other GC riders were crashing left, right and center and now he thinks he deserves millions..
The other way of looking at his Giro is that he gained time on everyone but Simon Yates in Stage 10-21, after being four minutes down on Del Toro after the first week. There is clearly a lot of potential there, given it was his third ever GC and his second top 10 in a row.

I still feel like we are missing the obvious point when talking about 'deserving millions'. IPT have the money to pay him millions, and he is obviously their best rider so they would be happy to match and exceed any Ineos offer in terms of wages. This is a decision based mostly on sporting, not financial, ambition – the only financial upside probably exclusive to Ineos is the one you get from winning more races, not from his salary.

His last extension was in 2023 if I'm not mistaken? He would have been very unlikely to get a huge deal he could get now. So unless Israel are willing to extend him further on increased salary he's *** himself signing a deal tha tlong

"Certain issues"

Nice to see Derek adhering to forum rules at least.

'I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it.'

Daniel Benson has deleted his tweet about his move to Ineos being considered 'a done deal', some kind of client journalism going on here I think, who it is in aid of not yet clear, looks like a David move tbh.
Benson - client journalism?! BRING ME MY VICTORIAN FAINTING COUCH
