Wanderlei Silva put a video on YouTube stating he was retiring from MMA because the UFC was denying him a stage to compete on (and somehow conflating his deliberate dodging of an OOC with the UFC not respecting its athletes). His attorney has been adamant that the Nevada State Athletic Commission had no jurisdiction to sanction "The Axe Murderer" because at the time of the offence, he was not licensed to fight by the state. His hearing before NSAC would have been this coming week, so I don't think the timing of his announcement was mere coincidence. I think he and/or his lawyer(s) had reason to believe they intended to deal harshly with Silva, and he quit to preempt the punishment.

At the time of the incident, Silva was under contract with the UFC, and was scheduled to fight. The NSAC agent who came to administer the OOC also had the paperwork for Silva's license application, so the procedure was full of obvious holes. Apparently the fighter's UFC contract said nothing about submitting to OOCs.

The truth always sounds so simple. Sure - here take a sample, I don't dope.

Ya know?

He was an exciting fighter at least.

is this satire or something? sounds too familiar :p
who says that 98% thing? danilo di luca? lol

while fueling yourself to the limit with all kinds of stuff to compete is something i can't blame you and i do understand it, doing that to some innocent animals is absolute cruel and i hope these people will live the other lifes as bulls on speed themselves

Compared with torturing the beast by sticking barbs in it for 20 mins, & then just before the poor animal collapses from blood loss, sliding a blade thru it's heart ?

Rowing

I can't think of a fighter or an athlete who embodied roid rage more than he.

Not a fan myself.

Harsh is an understatement.

NSAC gave Wanderlei a $70,000 fine and a lifetime ban.

Dana White mentioned weeks ago he thought the smack-down was coming for The Axe Murderer. And as fickle as NSAC has been known to be (Vitor Belfort effectively received nothing more from them than a few months suspension for TWO failed OOCs), that gives me to believe he had insider information, maybe even put the bug in their ear(s).

On hearing the news, Silva responded, "Those who are trying to take me down, come get it. War is just beginning, sons of b-----s. They will see that we’re the ones who run this s—t, bunch of playboys."

Mighty bold words for someone circling the drain. Who in hell does he think he is, ...Lance Armstrong?

Hollow words from Silva but the ban goes to show how corrupt NSAC are.

It gets better. Read this. Next he'll be ranting about the second shoot-fighter on the Grassy Knoll, and top-secret catch-species bouts at Area 51.

And this from Sherdog.com:

While UFC President Dana White expected the penalty to be harsh, he still was somewhat taken aback when he learned of the punishment imposed by the NAC.

“I didn’t see a lifetime ban coming, but probably the worst thing you can do is run from a drug test,” White told UFC.com. “You can’t run from a drug test.”

Didn't see it coming? Pull the other one, Dana. And I'm not quite clear how dodging a PEDs test trumps failing one either. I sometimes think the man has never met a hyperbole he didn't like.

EDIT:
Silva's lawyer says Wandy "probably" will appeal the fine and suspension. But the UFC already fired him, and after he's repeatedly given them the rough edge of his tongue in the press, I'd count it very unlikely that Dana would take him back, even if the suspension were overturned. Then again, it's not like Dana has ever taken a decision he couldn't be coaxed into reversing by wafting a stack of greenbacks under his nose.

If Wanderlei thought there was nothing left for the UFC to take from him, he was wrong. His diarrhea of the mouth provoked Dana into "Pete Rose"-ing him; eliminating from Hall of Fame eligibility.

Dana obviously is keen on everyone dealing with Wandy as harshly as possible, which I would argue lends credence to my theory the NSAC were following his recommendation (especially since Lorenzo Fertitta and two other Zuffa execs have worked on the commission).

And it seems Silva's new order of tinfoil hats has come in. Now he's claiming Dana might be manipulating fight results six months ago.

The ever so soft-spoken Joe Rogan weighs in on the Wandy Silva life suspension. Calls it "ridiculous."

These [fighters] have been juking the system for a long time. Chael was the tip of the iceberg and when he got popped it sent a real message to everybody....

...Let's look what's going on here. These guys keep getting caught and when they get caught they're saying 'Everyone's on it.' Vitor said that. He said like 90 percent of these guy use when they're in camp. He would know better than any of us, so if Vitor's saying something like that, he's not known as a liar, you've got to think there's something to it. If you want to nip that s**t in the bud there's only one f**king way. You've got to randomly test these dudes.

Well, that same plan certainly is working splendidly for Pro Cycling, wouldn't you say, Joe?

OT but this is the first year I can remember when what went on outside the UFC's octagon was more entertaining that what was happening inside. First there was the Chael Sonnen-Wanderlei Silva fight that turned into Sonnen-Vitor Belfort because The Axe Murderer dodged an OOC. Until Sonnen got popped (twice) and it changed to Belfort shadowboxing. Then what began as Sonnen-Silva morphed into Weidman-Belfort, but not until December, because NSAC suspended Vitor for six months (six months during which he didn't have any fights scheduled anyway) for failing two (count 'em, two) OOCs. Then Weidman ronnies his hand in training and we're back to Belfor shadowboxing again.
Sonnen/Silva > Sonnen/Belfort > Belfort/??? > Weidman/Belfort > Belfort/???

Alex Gustaffson hurts himself training for the Jon 'Bones' Jones rematch and Daniel Cormier steps in. Except Alistair Overeem manhandles Bones in training and tweaks his knee (come to find out, 'the Reem' has a track record of injuring people he's supposed to be 'training' with) and the Bones-DC fight gets reschedded for next year. Which prompts Gustaffson (still ranked the #1 LHW contender) to scream bloody murder, because his repaired knee should be healthy months before that, and it was supposed to be his fight (against Bones) in the first place. But a series of high-profile public scraps already had taken place between Bones and DC before their first engagement was postponed that made it clear this fight is personal between them, a controversy which Dana fully intends to milk to the last centime.
Bones/Gustaffson > Bones/DC > DC/??? > Bones/DC

War Machine (nee: Jon Koppenhaver) beats holy hell out of his porn "actress" girlfriend and goes on the lam. But War Machine turns out not to be Jason Bourne, and he gets caught and arrested in short order.

Renan Barão gets light-headed trying to stand up from a hot bath while cutting weight, falls, cracks his noggin and gets hospitalised just hours before the weigh-in for his rematch against the man who took his title, T.J. Dillishaw.

Stefan 'Skyscraper' Struve, who has had a history of heart ailments, has a panic attack in the lockerroom in the minutes before his fight against Matt Mitrione. And since the attack presented many of the same symptoms as a heart attack, the fight was scrubbed. UFC cameras showed Struve weeping profusely in the lockerroom, and Mitrione genuinely consoling him, like a dad comforting a child who's puppy just was run over by the dustcart.

Anthony 'Rumble' Johnson suggests (to the press) that he and Gustaffson both got no dance partners so they might as well have a go. Dana likes the idea and schedules the fight. Then word comes that Rumble had been arrested for assaulting the mother of one of his children (who since has declined to file charges). Dana suspends Rumble pending the completion of investigations but says he isn't yet pulling the plug on the Gustaffson fight pending that outcome.
...........................> Gustaffson/Rumble > Gustaffson/???

And former Middleweight champ Anderson 'Spider' Silva (oft proclaimed the GOAT, who Weidman knocked out, then broke his leg, in successive fights) is scheduled to return January next against Nick Diaz. Except Diaz was arrested for drink driving, which got some industrious reporter digging, only to find out this was Nick's second DUI offence. Dana announces none of this changes plans for the Silva comeback fight.

All of which must have (WWE owner) Vince McMahon thinking his scriptwriters are WAY overpaid, because they couldn't create anything this outlandish and bizarre on their best day. I can't imagine how it could get more convoluted, but I'm fair certain, if we wait a week or three, that it will.

EDIT:
I stand corrected. According to Fox Sports, Anthony 'Rumble' Johnson wasn't arrested, and the alleged incident occurred two years ago. The woman waited this long to report it. But misery loves company, so now another ex-girlfriend is claiming he beat her up.

EDIT II:
To counter Silva's ranting about UFC fighters being overworked and underpaid, Dana White points out he has paid Wanderlei $9.7 million for fights in the UFC, and he only has fought six times in the last five years.

Queen's horse doped

Okay so this story first broke in July:

`A racehorse owned by the Queen has tested positive for morphine, a prohibited substance, Buckingham Palace announced. Estimate, which won the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 2013 and came second in the same race this year, is a five-year-old filly trained by Sir Michael Stoute.'

On Radio 4 yesterday it was announced that the British Horseracing Authority had found Stoute innocent, and accepted that the morphine had probably come from feed contaminated by poppy seeds. Oddly today I can't find any coverage of this on the web news sites.

I'm surprised it wasn't his mother buying it from the pharmacy:D

Was on the BBC sport section yesterday.

Still is one of the three lead stories in the horse racing sub section

8 total horses found to have tested positive from a contaminated feed batch.

15 year old Russian twins banned

15 year old middle distance runners Olga and Elena Paushkina har been banned for two years after testing positive for some unnamed substance in out of competition tests 16 April. (RUSADA seems to not publish what substance the suspended athlete tested positive for, but IAAF will eventually publish it on their sanctions list).

At the other end of the age spectrum of athletics, 46 year old Italian triathlete/ironman/marathon runner Giuseppe Bardelli has been banned for four years for refusing to submit blood sample as well as testing positive for Nesp (darbepoetin alfa), betamethasone, anastrozole and testosterone.

That is to my knowlegde the third Italian darbepoetin positive this year. The other two were in cycling, Luca Benedetti and 18 year old Giovanni Di Maria. Why are there so many NESP positives in Italy now? Darbepoetin/NESP was what Mühlegg was caught for at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002.

Given the geographical proximity of the atheletes, it sounds like they use the same Doctor, or possibly the the same pharmacy & they all got cross-contaminated

I think, doping Drs, will develop recipes of their own of drugs they think will boost performance, but be excreted by the body quickly, or have a small footprint, so the chances of triggering an positive are low.
